I agree. Early Morbid Angel is too good too be true and the later works are very good as well. I never understand why everybody hates "Domination" though...and "Formulas Fatal To The Flesh" is damn excellent as well. I remember reading somewhere that the latter contains some material which was written in the 80's. Is that true?

Domination is OK. But they never topped their first three albums imo.

The track "Hellspawn: The Rebirth" was originally on Abominations of Desolation.

That's true, there's also a long song on it which was written earlier (80's). The crappy thing is that I lost that cd, dammit
Formulas is a killer album, perhaps the most experimental of their albums. But I'm havig quite problems with Gateways and Heretic haven't convinced me either.
Oh yeah, definitely! They're probably the most consistent metal band ever. I can't think of any other bands with nine excellent albums and zero crappy ones. (Well, I suppose Sigh No More is kinda weak, but it's got enough good songs to not deserve being called "crappy.")
Well, I agree, yet more to the point of the original thread, they definitely modernized their sound starting on Somewhere Out in Space and in full-swing by Powerplant. In other words, with the arrival of Richter and Zimmermann. The band became less theatrical, less progressive... and instead they focused on more direct "rockish" songwriting and introduced an almost monochrome production technique to back it up. It worked for me, and I would name their two most recent albums among this decade's absolute favorites. "Empress" was the best new heavy metal song I heard from 2007.

That was in reference to a band with nine good albums.
Although, the crappy part is debatable...
I personally don't like Gamma Ray at all.

I definitely agree with some of the mentions so far: Virgin Steele (I actually prefer their newer releases to their first few), Jag Panzer, and Gamma Ray
I'll add that the new Scorpions is quite good and manages to integrate modern elements with their 80s sound in a way that they'd been unsuccesful in doing until now.
