Welsh NWOBHM

Post by Keir »

Here's an overlooked subset of the genre that I've been really into lately. Diawled of course rules, but I recently bought Crys' Tymor yr Heliwr LP and I love it. Some of the more well-known English speaking bands from this country are great too, like Persian Risk, No Quarter, Nighttime Flyer and Traitors Gate. What are some other Welsh NWOBHM bands I should check out, particularly Welsh language ones?

I can't think of any other Welsh speaking bands off the top of my head, but two good English speaking bands are Stormqueen and Tok-io Rose. Stormqueen has been reissued on vinyl by OPM records. You can download the Tok-io Rose single from the Poisonoise section.

I forgot to mention Preyer. Their album has recently been officially reissued on CD. A little late (1986) to be true NWOBHM, but is typically listed as such.

Best band is surely WILD PUSSY, not welsh speaking though, but their MLP MECHANARCHY delivers OMEN-like Power Metal and to me is the best UK album ever.

It might not be the best ever, but it surely slays. Great but insanely rare stuff!

Yeah, WILD PUSSY were great. Quite METAL CHURCH-sounding Power Metal. Still nothing will ever compare to "S.O.S." and "Noson Y Blaidd" with The Mighty Y DIAWLED!

Kier: I've always wanted to hear CRYS. Think you could rip & upload it?

I've heard of Stormqueen, I really need to check them out. I downloaded the Tok-io Rose single and the first song at least is very good.

I'm familiar with some of the later bands like Preyer and Wild Pussy but right now I'm mostly interested in hearing older stuff. (And Wild Pussy is probably out of my price range anyway!)

Crys actually have a compilation CD that is still in print, so I won't upload the whole thing, but 2 of the best tracks from Tymor yr Heliwr aren't on it so maybe I can upload those. They do have a MySpace page where you can hear some songs: http://www.myspace.com/crysroc

In that myspace site they mention a Best of CD "to be released" under the Sain label, is that the one you've mentioned? If so, would you happen to know where it can be found for sale?

Yes, that's the one. It came out in 2006 and you can buy the CD from the Sain Records website or download it from iTunes.

I just uploaded the LP exclusive tracks in Poisonoise.

For the S.O.S. single I have no idea, but here's the Noson y Blaidd single I won:

From what I remember of the few others I've seen for sale, the price I paid is about average.
