Tips regarding the covering of songs

Which HELL-cover should PORTRAIT choose to cover?

The groups/ musicians who choose to cover a song of another band,

should choose songs that are lesser in quality, mediocre, banal, etc., as they are easier to remake it amap. The more well-done songs are more difficult to cover. It is of no use to play song close to the original. Better avoid them, save in case band/ musician really has a tremendous idea how to remake it.

For example: Portrait's cover of song of Hell (

) should sound 90% Portrait and only 10% Hell, that is, only the essence of the original song is kept. The cover should not disclose original immediately if ever.

in my opinion i think it's totally up to the bands themselves whether they wanna cover a song or not. It might be rewarding for them personally to cover their favourite bands... even if its not the most fitting tribute

and covering songs live is always great.... its not like HELL or any cult bands of old is ever gonna play your local pub

agree, we are very unlikely to witness Hell live in concert. though I still understand the meaning of cover as the same as the meaning of remake. Is it not? That poses a lot of questions and consequences: If Portrait would play Hell as Hell did, they would surely gain a lot positive feedback from side of 80's adorers. Since Hell are not that well known, Portrait would help revive Hell. But would they not become Hell-wannabees? That would probably lead us to "clones we learned to love thread". Oh, heck this is becoming too complicated. To shorten, I surmise, that for the sake of making good remake, the instructions from the first post are safer. Here one should be creative. To "only" play a song is different. But perhaps to play Hell as Hell did is walking the thin ice. What would happen if Hell's atmosphere would not be captured?*

*please, see upper rant as wholly hypothetical. Oh, and I got an idea ...

The 5 guys known as Portrait have decided to play a Manilla Road-cover as far as I know. I just warned them that it would be hard to "revive" that terrible nasal voice of the MR singer. As far as these HELLs go I haven't heard anything. HELL are probably so unknown that PORTRAIT might have forgotten that they exist at all, who knows?

Thanks for warning the guys and so, feels safe. Well, when doing a cover I'd always think it's more interesting not to revive everything in the original, but to try making your own interpretation of the song. Quite pointless otherwise isn't it, at least if you're going to record it.
As for the Hell-cover, memory has served the band members well. And if it wouldn't, they would ju always have you to remind them :P

Live I did some easy stuff like Dead City (Violent Force) and burst command til' war (sodom). With burst... it's easy to make something special because such a primitive and brutal song gives you space for some stuff.
