On the edge of the unknown (recommendation thread)
Basically I’m really just starting to get into the really underground metal (some overlooked mainstream bands as well still) I want some suggestions to start heading me in the right direction. I love most genres of metal (not as much of the extreme genres) but Speed and Traditional Metal (Followed closely by Thrash, N.w.o.b.h.m., Power etc) are my favourites. I’d just like some recommendations and places you guys could suggest I start I can’t really be all that specific with everything because I want suggestions and comparisons for bands of basically all the traditional genres. It would be great if you could name bands/albums and a bit about each you list. Anyway I’ve put up a link to a Microsoft excel file of my current collection so you can get an idea of my tastes/favourite bands so far.

With Speed Metal I love all types but specifically the melodic stuff: Running Wild, late 80’s Riot, Running Wild, Mania, early Helloween, Scanner, Kruiz, Agent Steel, Helstar, Paradox, Savage Grace etc
But give me suggestions from each genre: Traditional, Speed, Power, Thrash, N.W.O.B.H.M. Doom, Death, Black, Progressive (not a big fan of Progressive Metal much more so of Progressive Rock) etc, etc. Add anything else you think would tickle my fancy.
Thanks.

Hey James!
(I'm 99,99% sure that we talked once or twice through MSN 'cause this album list is basically the same you sent me then
)
Anyway, some recommendations, not so underground but not in your collection:
Sarcasm - Crematory (1989 / SLO) - speedy thrash metal!
Mysto Dysto - The Rules Have Been Disturbed - www.rustycagerecords.com and first Mandator (Initial Velocity)
Tourniquet - first album - thrashed Mercyful Fate?
Target - both (especially Mission Executed)
Powermad - EP & album (new is coming this summer)
Kruiz - Kruiz and Kruiz-1
Kinetic Dissent - I Will Fight No More Forever (this one has some funky elements thrown in it, but the rest is fine example of tech speed/thrash)
Griffin (US) - heavy metal as it should be
Graven Image - People in Hell (rereleased !) - simply one of the best heavy metal bands in the world!
Wikka (CAN)
Vulture !!!
Toxic Shock (US) - amazing demo only thrash band from US! Reminds on bands ala Vio-Lence at times.
Arcane - Destination Unknown - technical speed metal!
Master (RUS) - same
Phantom Lord - Evil Never Sleeps (it's for download in pois..)

CHECK THAT ONE OUT !!!!!sovdat wrote:yes, that's meWell, I don't use msn more than once or twice a month, so we'll see
Another good album to check out:
POWER LORD - The Awakening
+ EXCESS (Fra), ADX (Fra), EXODO (Spain), DANGER ZONE (Ita) + everything mentioned in de "raw heavy metal thread" + almost everything reviewed on this site.
Long Live The Loud !!!
Since visiting this forum on a regular basis, the one album that I sought out (due to high recommendations from DaN etc...) ..and have not yet stopped listening to ever since tracking it down is 'SACRED BLADE - OF THE SUN + MOON', and also the re-recorded version as 'OTHYRWORLD' is just as incredible, if not better!!!!!! I guess they are kinda trad/power/prog/metal, with atmosphere.. good solid songs, production (especially on re-recorded version) & classy songwriting with excellent vocals...
Please.. if you do yourself one favour this year, seek these albums out and buy them! Fantastic stuff, you wont be disappointed!
Here's the link: http://othyrworld.com/sacred_blade/index.shtml
There's also a bootleg on Reborn Classics available that is worth tracking down for the amazing 'IC EYES' track!
And the best thing is they are Canadian too!
As far as consitency goes (& as far as I'm concerned) you cannot ever fault Canadian bands!
See also:
RAZOR (thrash), INFERNAL MAJESTY (black thrash), VOIVOD (GODZ!), SLAUGHTER (thrash, death), RUSH (prog), SACRIFICE (thrash), DBC (thrash), OBLIVEON (thrash/cyber metal), BLASPHEMY (black metal), OUTBREAK (speed metal), ANVIL (METTTALLL!), WITCHKILLER (trad metal), FIST (trad/hard rock), PILEDRIVER (speed metal/thrash), TRIUMPH (hard rock/metal)... blah, the list is endless... and all good!

Here are a few bands whose albums you won't have much difficulty to find: HOLOCAUST (you like NWOBHM, don't you?
), newer albums from BLITZKRIEG, MALEDICTION from France, the CORONER albums you don't already have (begin with R.I.P.).
Try to get GILLMAN albums too, you may like them more than ARKANGEL ones (though ARKANGEL are gods, period)! They are somewhat hard to find, except Cuauhtemoc that you find in several distros.

Damn, I always find it so difficult to come up with recommendations of a broader nature. A bandlist a mile long flashes before my eyes but where to start?
First some "here here"s:
SACRED BLADE - Yes yes yes! An ESSENTIAL band if there ever was one. Untouchable, original Mystical Metal!
BLACK HOLE - No comments needed.
ARKANGEL/GILLMAN - Together w/ RESISTENCIA there were no other classic Metal/nwohm even close to their supreme quality from the South American continent. 2 first albums by each band are mandatory in any Metal collection.
HOLOCAUST - Raw & simple yet somehow unique Brittish Heavy Metal which I love to death. Their old live video from 81 is out on DVD now and a must-buy.
DANGER ZONE - see my review.
I can't recommend the GLACIER mlp enough either. And Italians FELINE MELINDA made an outstanding, criminally underrated Speed Metal MLP in the late 80's which I think you can check out at VOD. And TENSION - "Breaking Point" is one of the most extreme examples of Supreme Quality v/s Availability ever. And etc ad infinitum...

Here's a joker: AGENT METAL from France. They're not even a "real" band and they still crush about 95% of any "serious" new old-school band. All their stuff should be available for download and if you think I'm overrating them start off with this masterpiece. Seriously one of the best Metal songs recorded in the 21st century. With Speed Metal I love all types but specifically the melodic stuff: Running Wild, late 80’s Riot, Running Wild, Mania, early Helloween, Scanner, Kruiz, Agent Steel, Helstar, Paradox, Savage Grace etc

If you're to acquire some knowledge with help of downloading, then I suggest that you try as many bands as possible. You'll be surprised by many of them, believe me. The best of these are worth purchase then.
