Old School Swedish Death Metal anyone?
Old School Swedish Death Metal anyone?
I've been using DaN's excellent 707 Inches article lately to research classic Swedish Metal. I finally noticed the reference at the top to Macbre End, Treblinka, and Utumno. I have the Relapse Records reissue of Macabre End (God Macabre), and love it, but don't know much about other obscure late 80's Swedish Death Metal bands. Besides Treblinka and Utumno, what other bands should I check out?
I've seen a 2CD reissue of the Treblinka demos. Is it worth getting?
Thanks.

TREBLINKA were a great and quite original, early Death/Black Metal band and that CD/Vinyl reissue is well worth looking out for if you enjoy the crude-yet-akward DevilMetal stuff. Closest reference? Maybe MORTUARY DRAPE.
The GOD MACABRE reissue CD is slightly remixed with some keyboard stuff exchanded w/ mellotrons. Jonas (old friend of mine) is a mellotron-maniac so there you go. Great band they were anyhow.
The UTUMNO 7" + MCD is the best and most unique Death Metal ever to have come out from Sweden (possibly together w/ the AT THE GATES debut EP) and a reissue of their stuff might come out on Relapse in the near future.
Have you picked up the "Swedish Death Metal" book yet? That one will probably be the best reference if you wanna dive deep into the scene in question. Personally I never became a die-hard fan of the "Classic Swedish DM"-sound. PAN-THY-MONIUM pissed all over any DISMEMBER, UNLEASHED or ENTOMBED release if you ask me. FURBOWL on the other hand... awesome shit.

nirvana 2002
obscurity
mefisto
ceremonial oath
afflicted convulsion
macrodex/crypt of kerberos
crematory
morgue
abhoth
entombed's "left hand path" is my favorite record out of this scene. though therion's "beyond sanctorum" isn't too far behind - that one i think tends to get overlooked due to the fact that the band went the direction they did on later albums

eyah, the Sorcery sven inch is great but i prefere the first wawe of Death metal around 1988, dont like that scene around 1991 to 93 so much.Noisenik wrote:I would add Concrete Sleep, Moral Decay and Gorement. Sorcery 7-inch and early Centinex demos were quite good, me thinks. Oh, and Exhumed/ Morpheus and Embryo. Embryo were also quite original in my opinion.

Unless you're gothic doom fan you don't need to. They made quite some ruckus in the media with their 2nd, 3rd and 4th album, but I still wonder what the fuss was all about. average at best.BloodOfChrist wrote:

Yeah, I enjoyed them a lot back then. The crude sound on the demos did more justice to the songs than the vinyls imo.anthares wrote:No one like Therion demos and first albums? For me the demos were heavy shit! Best from Sweden.
I have some really rare recordings from this scene which I haven't spread around much before, so if someone wants to start a Swedish Death Metal thread in Poinsonoise I'll try to contribute some after KIT..
