Toxic Metal? Necro Metal?
Toxic Metal? Necro Metal?
There is one guy on polish metal forums, who claims that there is something like "Toxic metal" and "Necro metal" - subgenres of brutal thrash. Generally he knows what he is talking about, he has big knowledge about old brutal thrash, death, black etc. But majority of people (me too) think that these "toxic" and "necro" terms are nonsense.
He claims that Toxic Metal is f.e. Pleasure to Kill or Extreme Cold Weather. Main characteristics of this subgenre: dry sound, fast and brutal, blackish shrieks, no audible bass.
He knows about it from one scandinavian music critic, maybe Ekeroth.
Anyone heard about these terms in the past?

To some people, bands that sound different are just not allowed to be in the same genre as bands that all sound the same, thus a new sub-genre must be invented so copycats can thrive, because that's simply how the xtreme metal genres work to some people I suppose (at least according to the NWN forums heh)??
Blasphemy was new and fresh at the time, combining death and black metal with arguably strong grindcore elements, so it's not Black Metal - It's War metal, and say hello to the hordes of clone bands who now call themselves War Metal!
Toxic Metal? Is Toxic Holocaust Toxic Metal? Is TOXIK Toxic Metal?!!?

I'm sure Toxik are Toxik metal and Toxic Holocaust play Toxic Holocaust metal
Making the genres more and more narrow makes very little sense and is basically just lazy. With just a few more words you could actually describe what they sound like.
The urge to make very narrow and specific generalizations on all things is a typical sign of autism or possibly Asperger's syndrome. It's often a reaction to a world that is too complex for some to make sense of. (Been reading up on it since a couple of my students have Asperger's)

I know I ain't doing much,
doing nothing means a lot to me.

Believe it or not... but i've thought the same about this guy! He claims that he can sit down and write down 500 most important thrash/death demos from most important to least, just like that. It isn't normal i think and it reminded me about autistic kids with special abilities, great memory, etc.great_knuthulhu wrote: The urge to make very narrow and specific generalizations on all things is a typical sign of autism or possibly Asperger's syndrome. what else would you call sodom, hellhammer, venom, bathory, and other bands up to 87 or so? thats one of the genre descriptors that i think are very accurate at describing the musicroihlem wrote:Personally I am very annoyed by some genres that "exist", especially by the "first wave Black Metal" genre....
I admit that I am no expert of Black Metal bands...if that kind of music of those bands you mentioned is called first wave Black Metal I would have no problems, but I am confused that the first wave Black Metal term is also used for bands such as Mercyful Fate, Running Wild, Holy Moses, Parabellum, Blasfemia and so on. Listening to all those bands I do not see any similarities in music. If it is only due to their satanic lyrics then I wonder why a lot of people are missing the first wave BM as their are tons of Heavy Metal or Thrash Metal bands with satanic lyrics....khiijol wrote:what else would you call sodom, hellhammer, venom, bathory, and other bands up to 87 or so? thats one of the genre descriptors that i think are very accurate at describing the musicroihlem wrote:Personally I am very annoyed by some genres that "exist", especially by the "first wave Black Metal" genre....

yeah, thats what immediately comes to mind when i hear that term. i wouldnt really use the term for the bands you listed - the colombians came a bit later and were way stranger, and MF, RW, and HM might have had satanism themes, but were playing a different sort of musicroihlem wrote:I admit that I am no expert of Black Metal bands...if that kind of music of those bands you mentioned is called first wave Black Metal I would have no problems, but I am confused that the first wave Black Metal term is also used for bands such as Mercyful Fate, Running Wild, Holy Moses, Parabellum, Blasfemia and so on. I remember in 80s Black Metal was defined thrash metal music with satanic/occult themes + image. So to this day this is the BM definition to me and therefore Mercyful Fate (not really thrash but what the hell), Bathory, Deicide and Blasphemy suit for this label perfectly. Its the lyrics and atiitude/image that makes BM, not shitty sound or good sound or vocal type. For me the main cathegories of metal are: heavy, speed, thrash, power, death, black, doom, hardcore/crossover, glam... and the recent termin to sum all up... extreme metal.
