old metal mixed tape for someone liking LinkinP.: what to do

Post by The Knell »

Okay I have this weird but nice person in my course. I am known as the one with a very weird taste in music and collecting vinyls. As we got into conversation I let him know I'm really into exotic stuff and he was actually interested in getting a CD of what I like. Now what to do, I hardly think he would like the stuff if I would give to him. The most heavy band he listens to is Linkin Park. I said that to him but he was interested regardless. Now should I do it if he most likely wont like anything of the music, all efford of choosing, compiling, etc.? He's a bit of a anime/manga type, yes a couple years younger than me, so very interested in checking out some japanese metal. After all it should represent my taste though, he asked for a CDR of what I'm listening to. So is there a point of packing lets say Blasphemy next to Pagan Altar, next to Parabellum and then comes Flower Travellin etc. Would that be a good idea? Should I make a mixed genres one from Rock to extreme metal, or just some japanese stuff what he's most interested in, or no extreme music at all, just maybe easier to get into metal.
Maybe I can show him the "right" path and suddenly we have a new member here

First you have to decide if you want to show him your taste range or if you want to give him a compilation that he might enjoy. I think that maybe he'd like FTB and some songs of bands like Sabbrabells. Now don't put a G.I.S.M. or Inzest song in there in case you want him to like it.
That initial question I said to you is the one I ask myself when someone wants me to show him/her what music I like, and that's what should define the character of the compilation.

I say make it a taste compilation, throw everything you enjoy in there and if he can stand it then fine. Lots of variety will mean that he'll like at least a couple of tracks just because of the juxtaposition though.

He has requested a sample of what you are listening to, so give him that. Try not to think about what he might or might not like. Also, if I were you, I would choose acts with a sort of left hand path approach to metal, make sure there are things on it that will be like nohing he has ever heard, I get a feeling that's what he's after ... "exotic" stuff.

Thanks so far, yes I think I'll go for a taste comp. Maybe a few extra japanese tracks. Softer stuff in the beginning, extreme stuff at the end.

A similar thing happened to me recently. I have a friend whose favorite bands are Tool and Lamb of God. I made a CDR for him just because I was curious about what he might think. This was the tracklist:

1. Gamma Ray - Beyond the Black Hole
2. Helloween - Phantoms of Death
3. Scanner - Buy Or Die
4. Helloween - Eagle Fly Free
5. Rage - Fast As A Shark (Accept cover)
6. Blind Guardian - Valhalla
7. Scorpions - He's A Woman, She's A Man
8. Running Wild - The Phantom of Black Hand Hill
9. Blind Guardian - Mirror Mirror
10. Helloween - Falling Higher
11. Gamma Ray - Land of the Free

He was completely blown away! I also made a death/thrash CDR for him with stuff like Morbid Angel and Bathory, but he hasn't gotten back to me about that one.

there is no much surprise when people who likes shitty "metal" get something new that is really metal, thats the way kids get into the real deal, at least here in my city...(sometimes they just turn into posing-monsters, a few of them really get into metal)

It's quite strange when that happens. I played Kraken - Greed and Deception and Dark Age - The Execution to a few people who have only heard mainstream modern 'metal' and they could very clearly spot the difference - and superiority - of the obscure stuff. I guess we're not crazy :P

Well there's is the other guy who just discovered the new Nuclear Blast catalogue and keeps on telling me what "DEAATH METARRLLL" is (Children Of Bodom, Devil Driver, etc.). I gave it a shot and showed him some basic stuff from the roots, well, might be interesting to hear how it started, Possessed debut and Death debut, and well it was "old mans crappy noise" to him. He's quite an obnoxious person and I dont really care to change his mind or show him some stuff any more. Maybe in a few months he turns into a "Style Raver" again whatever that is.

It's a tough business to "convert" someone.

I gave it up on my pals, `cause if you are in a certain age, it might be too late, to change your taste in such a fundamental way.

It's different thou with my nephew, he's 18 and he likes Metallica (Kill ´em all), Iron Maiden and Dark Tranquility. We also watched Saxon together when they made their nostalgic tour three years ago, and he was totally blown away.

My tip: If you want to persuade someone, why not use the same bands / songs, that helped you to discover metal?

This is the continuing dilemma for me! I'd say it's best to make him a "taste mix" and probably a couple more CDs of essential albums in their entirety(cdrs are cheap!). If he doesn't "get it" then he probably never will, but since he has expressed the interest it sounds like he could get into it!

I wouldn't bother pouring heart and soul into 'essential collections' for people that haven't clearly professed a strong interest in what HM is.

I don't know if I agree. In my experience, some people have to listen to a whole record before they understand/like it. I'm not saying go crazy w/50 cdrs, just some essentials like "Don't Break the Oath", "Into Battle" and of course "Orgasm of Death"!

geez! i dont know whta kind of "metalhead" i dislike the most, if this example, the one that feels the most metal by listening to such nuclear-ass bands,(without knowing any clue about real metal and is subgenres)...or teh ones that suddenly throw away their Slipknot shirts for Testament records....
