Treason - 1981 Demo

Post by pzman »

Hi guys,

Here's a great demo from Treason (i believe from the UK), that's certainly on the heavier end of the NWOBHM spectrum. Would be great if anyone can provide more info on these guys. Thanks in advance.

I sure can pzman, i have originals of this & their other demo. Great stuff!
Singer Stevie Denham & drummer Ace Finchum went on to Tranzzam later although Denham didn't stay long, Finchum left after they recorded their 1st demo and reunited with Denham in CRASH K.O. After that band folded they glammed it up & became TIGERTAILZ with Denham changing his name to Steevee Jaimz. Jaimz was kicked out after the bands 1st album "Young & Free", and formed St JAIMZ. Finchum stayed with TIGERTAILZ throughout their career. Following a 10 year hiatus they recently reformed a few years back.
Hope this is enlightening.

I'll dig out the tapes later & see if there's any additional info included.

I had a quick look for the originals, but can't remember where they are, although i recall the band was from the Oxford area.
After a quick look @ Metal Archives, the tracks from the 2nd Treason demo are the same songs creited to CRASH K.O. on their lone demo, same songs in the same order, so i presume they were the same recordings. It looks like CRASH K.O. may have been exactly the same band under a new name.
Sonically the 2nd demo is in the same style, with better production, good songs!
How these guys turned into Tigertailz i cannot understand.#
I'll kep looking for the tapes, i'm sure i have some correspondence with the singer from then too, and a Treason poster.

Just to make everything more clear :

Treason were originally a 5 piece from Oxford, playing heavy metal. I don't know what the 1st demo included, but the demo you have posted here is the second one - it has 3 tracks (not 2) -

Panic In the Streets
Revenge (re-recorded version of a track from the 1st demo)
Depths of Hell

the lineup on this demo was :

Dave Docherty - g
Steve Denham - v
Rick Page - b
Ace Finchum - d

don't know who the other original guitarist was, need to check with Malc.
they later turned into Crash KO, a heavy glam band with all the hairspray and stiletto strutts image ... lineup was :

Phil Vokins - g
Steve Denham - v
Rick Page - b
Ace Finchum - d

they have recorded 2 demos :

demo 1 :

Gods Will Fly
Wrath of a Tiger
This is the End

demo 2 :

Sorrow's Got Me in a Hold
It's Too Late

later they became Tigertailz ... I honestly don't know what you have against Tigertailz ... they were a great band ... they were all also inter-related with Neon Spirit and Rankelson from the Cardiff area ...

Thanks for the extra background info Boris, i'd forgotten Phil Vokins (later of Wrathchild was part of the story too), but there are a couple of inaccuracies.
When i received my demos in the mail from singer Steve Denham back in the day the band were still called Treason, he sent me the 2 track demo :
1. Panic In The City Streets
2. Revenge

& their newly recorded 3 track demo
1. Depths Of Hell
2. Gods Will Fly
3. This Is The End

Part of the confusion was probably caused by the way the band distributed their material. In their appearance in Kerrang magazine's "Armed & Ready" section they asked interested parties to send their own blank cassettes and a stamped addressed envelope rather than selling copies of the demos.
I assume that when Crash K.O. was formed they distributed the existing 3 track Treason demo under the Crash K.O. name or at least included tracks from it.
That's how it looks at any rate.
I've nothing in particular against Tigertailz, it's just a long way from the excellent meat & potatoes Heavy Metal of Treason.

I have the 2nd demo with the track listing posted by Boris, I think your right about the way they distributed the demo's, mine is handwritten with a groovy TREASON sticker on the spine, Fucking great band anyways. I think this was a common practice with a number of bands Deep Machine, Tobruk to name but two.
