Being a bit off topic:

How are the songs on Overkill's first EP from 1984? Never heard them before.

The EP is nearly as great as Feel the Fire !
Only the guitars are not as sharp like on Feel.
1 of the 4 songs is very slow, but very good IMO.

Funny thing is that i don't see anything common not only between OVERKILL and CARNIVORE, but also between OVERKILL and RAVEN BITCH, TYRANT'S REIGN, ULYSSES SIREN. I am not familiar with the whole OVERKILL discography, but i know damn well the FTF material and i really can't see why those bands were mentioned in this thread.

Ha, this reminded me of how divided opinions are on this album! I've met a lot of people saying it is Thrash Metal and many others saying it is Power Metal.
I think thrash metal fans with a power metal complex will say it's thrash and power metallers who hate thrash will say it's power, haha.
It is so great that both genres want to have it each one in their own ''catalogue''.

I was scratching my head too. None of those 3 really make me think Overkill.

I think DEAD ON could be a match, especially on the faster songs like "Full Moon" Mike Raptis did sound a bit like Blitz

Tension's Breaking Point? They came from the same scene and era, had very similar vocalists, and even had a song titled Wrecking Crew (which predates the Overkill one). They're more speed/power based, but the influence is still very present.

sentinel - the ep is great , features another unknown song in vein of feel the fire .... the power in black demo is great as well , got two songs who wasn't in feel , but have the same feel (heh) , man , "the beast" is freaking epic , it almost sound like somthing that should came out of manilla road or early manowar

The 3 are the ones who came closest to me, sorry ! Power/Speed Metal with a screaming singer and guitars too. On the border of thrash but no trash at all.
Overkill started to being Thrash with "Making over" only.

Of course all 3 are not as good as Feel the Fire in every department (singer, guitars production, songs). But you will find nothing what sounds like Overkill AND is as good !

Well, I can understand why you don't agree, but i thought the mixture of Power, Punk and Thrash metal might suit the fans of OVERKILL as well. Two very different vocalists, that's for sure.

Besides, both bands came out of Brooklyn / New York, that must count for something

Same old subject. Basically it's not an opinion thing, it's just that people who got into harder metal circa '85/ '86 either forgot what was REALLY labelled as Thrash to start with or simply followed what started to be described as thrash by publications (you know how influential 'big' mags are) by 87/ 88... memory, memory....

Well, i think that that was the case here in Greece. I can't recall not even one ''big'' mag that didn't label it as ''Thrash'', people have been reading that 20 years now and still, 9 out of 10 will tell you it's ''Thrash''.

Of course, it aint the ''hardest'' thrash you'll ever find, there were surely more savage recordings before and after FTF's release, but i'm of the opinion that you can't call it pure Power metal either. I think it lies somewhere in the middle of those two sub-genres, leaning more towards the ''power'' side.
