Blue Max's "March of the Trolls" is really an amazing song in the league of 'Wizard's Vengeance".

Ancient Rites? Terrible keyboards and awful drum sound, plus pretty lame black metal(like most of it). 'Dim Carcosa' is of course a reference to Robert Chambers' 'The King In Yellow', and at least it's a good source of inspiration.

I think Dim Carcosa is a pretty good album, but I probably wouldn't recomend it to most people here.

Steel Assassin - From the Vaults (Doesn't get more appropriate than this)
Voltz - Knight's Fall

Also Dark Wizard always does the trick for me. As does Sir Lord Baltimore's Kingdom Come song.

I'd never heard of Blue Max before the mention here, so thanks. I listened to the album, but found it really amateurish, and without any of the charm that can accompany such recordings. Some songs were simply unlistenable. 'March of the Trolls' started off as bad as the others but had a few cool moments, though I can't say it ever sounded great.

Not sure if they can be recommended but Blind guardian and human fortress to me also seem to have a 'medieval' sound

How does it sound like? I thought it was more AOR than metal really.
Well,it's not HM but even it is not AOR at all, their roots were into the prog of the 70' with male and female voices, with dark melodic scores because of the keyboards(in the tracks" Non ridere di Me" and "Il Sole"),there are some epic/medieval flavored songs("solo Dei/il sogno del guerriero")and some typical hard and heavy tunes("Su di te" and Rosa Fumetto") --- later i will open a thread about this band,ok?

I agree that "The Diabolic Serenades" has a certain 'medieval' atmosphere, which is a bit weird since it is their most aggressive album. Totally love this album, together with "Blasfemia Eternal" and their early singles.

However, I agree with Daniel on "Fatherland" and "Dim Carcosa" : shit production, crappy vocals and horrible music. Plastic metal. Unlistenable.
