Keeping your cool is good but passion is good too! The most interesting is when you see two opposing viewpoints that are both valid and where you might even agree with aspects of each. But yes, the reactions can sometimes take over the discussion and degenerate into madness and name-calling. That's not so good.

In my opinion you can state your opinions (this line sounds retarded) without being rude. I fail to see how namecalling and belittleing can help any meaningful dialog. I sure miss those rants too. Some of the best topics here.
