In my opinion Autopsy's "Mental Funeral" is true doom as it is true death metal. The perfect mix of two of my favorite genres which turns out in one of my favorite albums ever. The drums, guitar tone and bass sound in that album is just as doom as it gets.
I think it contains a fair amount of doom riffing. Of course if I have to describe it I'd say death first and doom second, but still I think it's one of the few cases where death/doom contains actual doom elements and it's not only slow paced death.

I agree that Mental Funeral (as well as severed survival) is doom metal -- Chris Reifert has stated in many interviews that Candlemass & Pentagram were big influences -- My ears hear lots of Candlemass riffing in Autopsy --
Death Doom is a great style of metal --- but there is lots of Crap out there...
It doesn't really matter how much you philosophize about Autopsy's riffs, in the end it stops being doom because of the growled vocals too. If people go around saying 'well to me this is x and x' you end up with nonsense, like people calling Johnny Cash doom. You like the music fine, you find it dark fine, doesn't mean you have to start fucking with definitions.
Are you the tyrant, who cast them to the sea?
One day you'll be among the dead.

I like fucking with definitions (where can I find them btw?), but I agree again.

Well, I admit I might have gotten a bit far at first, but as I said if I had to define Autopsy I'd say it's a Death Metal band, without a doubt. I just think that in that particular album (Mental Funeral) there's more Doom influence than the usual for an extreme band, but I'd never say that it's a Doom album and even less that Autopsy is a Doom band.
Out of my ordinary stylistic borders I guess... Still I only have Mental Funeral (their second, right?) and I kind of like the primitive Paranoid-like (the BS album) sound. How's the first one in this regard?
