For me the 'classic' doom sound (which isn't necessarily the same as the 'true' sound) would be early Candlemass + early Solitude Aeturnus (Solstice 'lamentations' also fit in)
That's not classic doom, those are Epic Doom Metal (see title first Candlemass LP).

trad/classic doom is the more heavy metal orientated stuff like Pentagram, Saint Vitus and Witchfinder General.
That's why I said, "For me the 'classic' doom sound (which isn't necessarily the same as the 'true' sound)". 'Classic' as in 'preferred option' or 'old favorite', not a specific subgenre.

When 'doom' comes up, the classics that immediately jump to MY mind are albums like 'Nightfall', Into the Depths of Sorrow', and 'Lamentations', not 'Hallows Victim' and 'Death Penalty'. Those are killer albums too and I like those bands/that style, I just don't think of that sound as being the classic Doom Metal sound. Probably just means I like 'epic doom' more than 'traditional doom'.

Yes, I know it's just a silly label; I just find it interesting that bands in so many different subgenres of doom all get referred to as 'true doom'

(Note: I posted this topic on another forum a couple of weeks ago but got almost no replies, so I thought I'd recycle it here)
I'll try to mention some not listed.

These are Doomy mostly
IRON MAN
DEATH MASK
ORODRUIN
PALE DIVINE
THE GATES OF SLUMBER

These new bands are Heavy Metal/Epic Metal with a dashes of Doom:
SINISTER REALM
ARGUS
ALTAR OF OBLIVION
GENOCIDE (Nippon) (although not new, will be available soon).
REACTOR (although not new, will be available soon).

I like Altar of Oblivion and the latest Gates of Slumber. I never got into many of the Maryland doom bands other than Pentagram. Don't know why, other than many of them seemed too similar to The Obsessed.

Well I dislike the title Tr00 Doom but first things to pop in my mind when talking about traditional/classic (hate these words too) Doom Metal are Saint Vitus and Pentagram. I'd argue that Candlemass is "true doom" too. It's epic sure but it still has doom riffs and the distinction is similar to Heavy Metal > Epic Heavy Metal. Epic might focus more on big compositions and all that but it's still Heavy Metal. For me the band becomes something else than pure Doom Metal when it mixes with another subgenre. For example Goatlord and Winter are both fine bands in what they do but they clearly have as much (or even more) Death Metal in their music as Doom.

Epic Doom Metal is also 'true'.

Just my personal thought but for me there's no "true" doom. Doom is for me just that desperate feeling that i get from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Born Too Late, Into Darkness, Jerusalem, Totuus Palaa, Last Vinyl Before Doomsday etc.

To better explain what you think is true or real doom you should post what you think are some false or fake doom. Their hordes are legion these days. They outnumber the bands we like here....

anything with growls
anything ending in sis or isis
anything southern lord related
anything containing (( or ))
drone
2 notes sustained for endless amounts of time
anything looking suspiciously hippy-ish
funeral 'doom'
and pretty much anything claiming to be doom these days.
it's as sickening as earache promoting posers like cauldron and white wizzard as the 'new' new metal.

There's no definition for true doom, but to me it is best represented by bands such as While Heaven Wept, Warning, Millarca, Lamented Souls, Scald and Icefall, I'm into this music from a lot of years now, and i'm still surprised and captured by this magical atmosphere everytime I listen to them.
I also dig some death/doom like Mystic Charm, Decomposed and Dusk, but to me it is simply slow and melancholic death metal. I listen to a lot of that Maryland rockin' doom, and I think that Lost Breed and Unorthodox are one of the best heavy bands ever....

Be serious. Goatsnake & Thorr's Hammer as bad as Cauldron?

There's lots of genuinely great bands you're dismissing just because they're not trad enough. Your loss.

What about early Cathedral??

They really revolutionized doom as we used to know it? I remember it being quite unique at the time...

Or were they just posers & lucky they became quite popular??

Forest of Equilibrium is still an outstanding album. "Reaching Happiness, Touching Pain" has to be the Saddest Music in the World.

I don't really think those Md/Va bands all sound like THE OBSESSED at all to be honest. I think all of them have their own sound. ASYLUM sound different than INTERNAL VOID, than REVELATION, than DEATH MASK than IRON MAN, etc.

There's 2 more I mentioned worth checking out.
