I have enjoyed a lot the demo LP released by Steel Gallery but I was not aware that this band had released numerous albums too and in fact are still going!

Can any of their "proper" albums be recommended? If so which ones? Metal Archives does not give much away but I am interested in hearing peoples thoughts...

Sorry, no STEEL PROPHET albums can be recommended from my part. Their best songs are in the demos with "Inner Ascendance" being top-notch technical power metal in the vein of early Fates and Maiden. Also the demo versions of the tracks they used in their albums were undoubtedly superior.
Imo it's better to stick to the demo material and forget about the albums.

Ah okay. Good to know. I think "Inner Ascendance" was also released on LP so perhaps i'll spend my £ on that instead. Thanks for the feedback.

I can recommend nearly everything from them !
Especially "Dark Hallucinatios", Messiah" and "Book of the dead" !
If you only like Underground-Stuff with bad Production you should avoid anyway !

These CD's are more melodic than their early material ! This is mostly because of Rick Mythiasin who took the place of the old singer and because of the better production ! This 3 albums are really GREAT !
Especially if you like good Guitarplayers ! Steve Kachinsky is great and quite unique too !

The "Unseen" and "Beware"are a bit too melodic and not as good as the others.

I think you would better at least listen to all of their stuff except maybe Unseen and Beware (how appropriate!). Dark Hallucinations is a favourite of mine but also their mid-nineties stuff like The Goddess Principle, Continuum, and Into the Void are quite good. There weren't much stuff like this back then so I guess that makes me kind of want to like them more than I should. Very much a case of "hit and miss" I think.

Think: The older the better and work your way forward would be my recommendation.

Besides the demo's I have Dark Hallucinations. I spin this one from time to time and like it a lot. Much much better then all the crap released during the same time under the "Power Metal" monikker. It requires some time to sink in but its worth the effort. They also made a cover from one of the best songs ever made on this album. I should try the rest of their discography too.

I have to admit that I enjoyed "Beware" a lot! It sounds different than their previous stuff, though...

That's true. Their Inner Ascendance demo is by far their greatest recording. I also like their early demos that's the reason I bought "Shallows of forever".

There's also the Ressurection Demo from 1986 for which I don't have much info, but I think it's with Nick Mantis on vocals. It includes some of the band's finest songs like 'Destroyer' and 'The Murder of Hart Northey', hope it's rereleased one day.

Decent songs here and there, but no great album i've ever heard. it's never a good sign when a band's best sons are cover versions (they did nice takes on The Apparition and some 'Maiden tune)

Absolutely normal reaction if the albums are the only thing you heard from them. Try some of the demos mentioned before and your opinion might change drastically.

Fair enough. I have a copy of 'inner ascendance' on the JP RC split, but TBH it's been so long since I played the SP half that I don't remember anything about it. Will re-visit it sometime. What changed so much btwn the demos and the albums that made such a big difference?

Having in mind the amount of great tracks of their demo period, this band should have made at least ONE great album. Unfortunately, the versions of any of the demo tracks that appeared on their albums/ep are so much weaker than the original recordings. Their albums generally sound lifeless and powerless to these ears.

Not only lifeless and powerless but wholly without identity IMO. It's really boring stuff, though at times you can hear there is potential in both material and playing. I got rid of all the SP stuff I used to have except the Pure Steel release of Inner Ascendance.
