I miss the 90's
I miss the 90's
I miss the time when I first got into Extreme Metal. Around 1995 for me. Man, I remember here in Stockholm when you went to a record shop and could buy Blasphemy, Mystifier, Root, Master's Hammer, Sarcofago CD's/LP's for less than ten bucks. One did not imagine that the future looked like this: Extremely expensive stuff on eBay, almost no good zines, photoshoped covers...
I mean, really I like living today, and you can easily download rare stuff, and keep in contact with people on forums. It's great in that way; but I sure feel nostalgic from time to time! I would like to go into a store tomorrow and buy "The Mighty Contract" for six bucks. Those were the days!
I guess many of you feel the same for the 80's. I'm just 30 years old...
I feel like this today because I foud "Passage to Arcturo" relatively cheap today.

man, I remember when I started getting into the underground and mailorders and shit in the end of the 80s and even up til the mid 90s you got a cd for £10 inlcuding postage. I even remember a time when vinyl was cheaper than a cd. even malicious records used sell their vinyls for less than their cds. I remember going into stores and coz noone liked Metal you had the pick of the litter. My first school trip down to London and myself and my mate nipped off for a wee bit and went into HMV and found arise newly released and arise shirts (yeah, i know..gimme a break
) and a heap of other metal records. the twat behind the counter remarking how satan was being kind to us that day.. and i'm "only" 30 too.

It's true that everything has become more expensive, but on the other hand everything got more expensive.
All things doubled in price (bread, milk,...) So to have a reasonable idea of a correct price, you should at least double the original price.
In my job, a guy who did the same thing as I do know, made about 1100 euro a month in 1996. I now make more then double that wage.
In retrospect, some albums got expensive, but you can still pick up the common gems for ok prices. Only the really rare things are expensive now.

I remember when I worked at Modern Invasion Music back in the early 90's & we had piles of copies of Rottrevore-Iniquitous... who woulda thought huh??
and original Burzum CD's & LP's, Destroyer 666 LP's, Sad Ex Magus LP's ...the black metal list was endless... & we had tons of stock as well

Why are a wise man & a wise guy opposites?
Beware, it'll be "I miss the 00s" in 5 years or so
Sure, everything was cheaper then but as Andreas said, the wages went up as well (inflation of everything). Ticker for Sepultura in 1992 costed 600 SIT (=2.5€), now it's a pain in the ass to see any foreign band under 25€. Even in 2003 you could see known foreign bands in Slovenia for around 12-13€ (For example, Cannibal Corpse + Sinister in 2003 for 12€, even the ticket for Metallica wasn't more than 20€ in 1999)
.... well anyhow, I miss the pre internet times as well, although it's much easier to get stuff now (I know that I would own 5% of stuff I have now if I didn't have internet - you simply can buy much cool metal around here).

Thus, don't expect to find these gems cheaper than 8 € today:Andreas wrote:It's true that everything has become more expensive, but on the other hand everything got more expensive.

Witchfinder General - Soviet Invasion
Mythra - The Death and Destiny EP
Yup, I miss the nineties big time!

An example of how silly things are getting: I picked up Eyes of Horror (vinyl) about three years ago for, I think $15 - $20. The guy who owns the shop from where I bought it just recently had another copy up for auction on NZ's version of eBay for $200 starting bid! Forgot to check if anyone bid.

You want it to be one way. But it's the other way.

I though that the vinyl prices went through the roof the last 10 or 12 years.
My first visit on a metal record market was ca. 1997, and there were maybe a handful of LP's that went for more than 50€ (Satan's Host, Wikka, Northwind, stuff like that)
Now look at eBay at what you get for 50 bucks
. No real rarities at all.

I mean, yeah, of course the price of everything has gone up, transport, food... sure. But take some "Kult" limited Black Metal vinyl like "Salvation" by Funeral Mist, or some Vlad Tepes CD. Man, I bought several Vlad Tepes CD's for like six bucks back in the 90's and no one cared for that band then. And sure, they should cost more today than back then, but is the price reasonable? It's NOT the double, or tripple, It's much more than that. eBay has sure ruined a lot. And Vlad Tepes or Funeral mist were just an example, there are many more of those albums, just ridiculous.
Of course, eBay is also a great thing, but in a different way.
