Actually the word brutal makes me always think of this album. One of the best thrash or deathrash albums ever.mordred wrote:Definitely 'Pleasure to KIll' in 1986 anyway.

Early Napalm Death should be mentioned by now
One problem w/ identifying brutal releases is that the bar for 'brutal' gets raised over time. Venom were brutal in 1981, but 'Welcome to Hell' is pretty tame by today's standards.
One question- how does 'Envoy of Death' compare to 'Cycle of Life'? Sarcofagus has a big rep for being this insanely heavy, over the top band, but 'Cycle of Life' has never struck me as being outrageously heavy or wild in any way. To me it just sounds like spacey 70s hard rock. Maybe I'm missing something, or maybe they were heavy by late 70s standards (not a period i pay much attention to)? Or maybe EoD is the heavy one and CoL isn't?

Yeah, Messiah and Death were real pioneers of death!stormspell wrote:1986 is definitely MESSIAH - Hymn to Abramelin for me
Didn't Morbid Angel start to play death metal in the mid-80s? A album that was later officially released, I think it was "Abominations of Desolation". That should also be on top of the list.
I also have take up the cudgels for my fellow countrymen Protector! They were ahead of their time with their brutal thrash / death metal sound.
Oh man, Protector. Some cuts are so depressing, especially in Urm The Mad. Stuff like 'Nothing has Changed'. And when they deathrashed, they deathrashed with the best of them. I guess heavy Kreator mania there.
The thing about Kreator circa Pleasure to Kill... they were unhinged. The music sounded genuinely deranged. South american thrash has this quality too. The bay area just sounded so hilariously wimpy against pleasure to kill. However the songs aren't exactly well-written pinnacles of musicality at all, but perhaps that's not the point.
If I put early Morbid Angel and Kreator side to side, Kreator shred the face off the medieval 'classy' effect MA were going for with sheer alien aggression. Almost out of control.
