Interesting concept, but one disc is far too short for a compilation of Speed Metal. Not to mention a lot of people seem to confuse Power/Speed/Thrash so I can already see people butting heads over this...

I was jotting down things the other night for different compilation ideas of mine. It may be of interest here. I had best spoken intros (big list), or different cool sounding intros (eg Hammeron - Silent Victim), or ones with speeches from history (Apollo Ra - Winds of Time, Hammers Rule - Calm before the storm/After the bomb...), another one was a comp with songs about Aliens, or with sounds of wolves howling (eg High Level, Witchkiller).

Comps w/ goofy themes are always fun. I used to have one where all the songs dealt with time e.g., Helloween's 'a little time', Blind Guardian's 'time what is time', Mercyful Fate's 'time', etc.
A Tolkein-inspired comp would be kind of fun to assemble- hobbits are tr00 kvlt I've also thought of doing a zomibe and/or nuclear war-themed comp... tons of possibilities. Maybe if I have some time later this winter I'll look into this more

I've always wanted to make this just to include the mighty Brocas Helm song Into the Ithilstone!
I watched for you by the Eastern gate till the bloody break of day....
Not to mention Cirith Ungol's Cirith Ungol and many others.

That sounds like a great idea, so many great songs to choose from, i think every great band has at least one instrumental song and they often turn out to be my favourites.
Yeah, i second this suggestion and proffer "March Of The Crabs" by Anvil as a must-have inclusion.

Not a huge fan of instrumentals but there are plenty of good 'uns. My fave has always been 'Into the Unfathomed Tower' by Candlemass. I'll also give a nod to Overkill's 'frankenstein' although it's a cover tune.

Instrumental compilation would be neat. There are a ton of great instrumental metal "songs" that are far more than filler, intro, outro, random classical music cover style songs. Though it would probably be good to feature at least one classical cover..my vote would be going to Vavel's take on Bach's Toccata. If you decide to go with the instrumental idea I'll surely be looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with.
