Of course it was! That's what pissed me more when I saw the kind of approach most of (I'd say 95%) the mods and admins had in Thrashmageddon!
We always shared for the fun of giving rare, unusual music to other die-hards who in return did the same. We transformed the once-public hub into a private one, so that leeching would stop. We had quite a few "skeptic" old time collectors contributing to the common cause. We even had enthusiastic discussions through the chat window amongst ourselves. It was a real community. And what I see in this Thrashmageddon site is a ton of leechers, enriching their mp3 collections so they can say in other places how cool they are for having this and that. I don't have anything against people who have mp3's of stuff they can't afford or can't find. I myself happen to have quite a few of those! I would NEVER pay 1000$ for a PARADOXX EP, or 300$ for a MEDIEVAL STEEL, or whatever! And sometimes I even download mp3's of new albums to check out if I like it or not. The difference is:
1) regarding the old "out-of-print" releases: I actually know the story of most of them. I have fanzines of that period which I read and re-read 1000 times that review most of that stuff and always made me curious to listen to it. Hell, 90% of the time I REALLY know what I'm getting and why I'm getting it. And the remaining 10% is because someone like me advised me to get it (But I still refuse to pay 100$ or more for a release.. Seeing as the money is never going to end in the artist pocket and even if it did...)
2) regarding the new releases, when I like something I downloaded, I buy it. Simple as that.
