"Woe to us, the Metal misfits..."

[Yeah, this is an interesting subject definitely worthy of its own thread. (Split from the "Who Are You" introduction thread.) /Administructor]

Welcome dude with the strange username.
thanks. I've actually thought about that seriously here and there. what do you answer when people want to know what you listen to? I'm always at a loss there because the woman on the street most likely won't know any names I throw at them anyways. answering metal would leave too many dear bands in the cold. although I am without a doubt most obsessive about metal. anyways, in private I'm fine with calling anything I listen to metal out of principle. just as the name of any beverage can (and arguably should) always be substituted by 'beers' (yes, in the plural)

You got a point on that. I have stopped telling people about my musical preferences unless they ask me first. And even on that case, when i sense that the guy who's asking me "What kind of music you listen to?" has a very casual interest in music generally, i just say "I listen to a lot of things. How was your day today?"

my strategy exactly. or I mumble something like 'mostly rock in some wide sense' and then go on to 'and how was your day?'. although it's probably lost on people with 'a casual interest in music' anyway, saying 'rock' is pretty much a precaution to protect myself against some of the more vile assumptions strangers might make about my musical preferences. as you know it's war out there. for christs sake, they have beats-per-minute and sampling!

To the people of my generation it might also mean all the Bon Jovi's and the Europe's that have plagued the world.

Same! (And I'll try to ignore that whole "cream your pants" phrase.. :? )

On the people asking about your musical preferences-question:
I usually answer "mostly metal", haul out the latest edition of the norwegian mag Scream from my purse, show them the front cover and watch them go  for the rest of the evening! Occasionally adding "Are you serious?", "You're kidding, right?" and similar questions..

What follows is a very common conversation between me and one my non-metal friends.

What are you going to do tonight?
I'm going to a gig.
Where?
In Athens.
Who's playing?
Forget about it you don't know them.
What do they play? Metal and that kind of shit you listen?
Yeah, metal and that kind of shit i listen..
Who are they?
You don't know them.
Tell me.
Come on, man, you don;t know them i tell you.
Tell me re malaka.
Cloven Hoof.
You fool, instead of going out with some chicks, you go to listen to those idiots Cloven Wolf.
Yeah yeah Jim i know, i'm an idiot myself, that's why i go. Anything else?
Nothing else, dude, we'll talk soon.
OK, man.

That's why i don't talk much about music anymore.

that discussion seems like sth I know. Only "idiot" is replaced with weirdo and idioms like "every calf has its joys" are being expressed.

It was used in a friendly way, but even so, it can give you a clue about how the others feel about your music

Hahaha....

That's so typical...

Anyways, I always hate how awkward it gets when talking to women in a small talk type scenario and the "what kind of music do you listen to?" question gets asked, so you tell them "rock" or "metal" and then when your asked to list a few bands she hasn’t heard of any of them and you can tell she thinks your weird.

I think that this part of the thread should be split into it's own.

my favorite one is where you're talking to someone about music & they ask what kinda style you like (mind you I'm usually wearing a cryptic slaughter or death angel t-shirt, or something of the like)
..and when my reply is 'metal' i then get asked 'like what? metallica? or dream theater??'
i don't know how to reply, i usually say that i'm more into obscure metal. like trad, or thrash etc..
then i get asked, 'oh, like what? iron maiden? or slayer?
and it goes on...
so usually i try to avoid the conversation as they wouldn't understand.
i guess then i probably come across as 'arrogant' and a 'know it all'
(I get it all the time coz i work in a hifi/cd/dvd store)
Why are a wise man & a wise guy opposites?

So you've stopped talking about one of the things your most passionate about in life? Not good!

Well, see.. If you add the female interpretation phenomena to this scenario, you're actually calling her stupid -in a most indirect, obscure way. No wonder you guys never hook up!

Be more passionate about the music, and try to explain why she hasn't heard about your favorite bands. If she's really just making conversation, and isn't at all interested in what you're listening to, she'll actually change the subject herself.

WIN!
