I think I'll agree on the Pagan Altar suggestion.

The cover

Weak tracks on this? Which ones?! There's no accounting for tastes of course, but it would surprise me if anything on here is actually weak for most!

Thank you for the complement. I am listening to all my Pagan Altar music to figure out WHICH song is the most emblematic, a tough thing because they're just so good.

Reincarnation or Judgement of the Dead are the best for me

go for "The Erl King"! not 1986 by far but it has some sort of father/ son topic (if only the child didn't die in the end.. )

I was thinking The Erl King too (big surprise :D) but some other good ones would be The Lords of Hypocrisy, The Sorcerer or Flight of the Witch Queen.

Oh and I'm with The Knell, that cover is absolutely stunning!

That is some beautiful art for sure Helm, you've done it again!
It's a really nice/tough project you've undertaken here to try & introduce your father to the music we all love, i hope it's successful in helping him see why the music means so much to you, and of couse, that he enjoys the results.
Perhaps a little more from the earlier years would have helped ease him in to the genre more easily, but you know him better than we do obviously.
If you end up plumping for more from that era, Leaf Hound's "Freelance Fiend" and something from Flower Travellin Band's "Satori" would be essential picks. Also the self titled Captain Beyond album mixes proto Metal & progressive style better than any other band before or since.
Hope this info is of some use, and your successful in introducing him to "the dark side".

We've rocked out to Captain Beyond in the car many times.

Sincerely, dad 'gets it', I think on the intellectual level, what I find in HM. He's a very intelligent man and he can wrap his head around geopolitics, I'm sure some simple 'power and glory' isn't beyond him. What I want to happen is more to 'feel' it than just to be able to tell him 'See, here? They just sang 'might is right!', that sort of intellectual pursuit.

I haven't listened to Flower Travellin Band ever! Nor Leaf Hound! Uninformed am I!

Thank you all for your help and interest in my endeavor. The Corroseum is always a very nice place.

I think it needs Deep Purple. And I've only listened to Sartori by Flower Travellin' Band, but a song from that album MUST be on this one. I'm thinking Part 1 would be appropiate.

Wow! You should really check out FTB as they're really an essential band imo. I'd start with Satori or Made In Japan (Kamikaze anyone??!).

I'd go for both. They've made a comeback album this year, but I can't recommend it:

I'd look into Satori but strangely it seems my Thrashmageddon account has been suspended for an unknown to me reason and the suspension is due to end on Oct 13 2008, 02:46 PM. Which is, in the past :O

I could upload Satori for you tomorrow if needed.

I was thinking about this and Manilla Road's "Metal" popped up in my mind.
