SACRIFICE (JPN) - Crest Of Black (1987)

I recommended this album in Thrash Classics thread and since I haven't uploaded anything in a while I decided to put this one on rapidshare.

What we have here is a wicked punch of evil thrash metal.
So I assume you're thinking something in vein of In The Sign Of Evil, right? Nah. This band takes a different approach. It's a doomy & moody album with lots of slow or midpaced parts but also faster bursts here and there. It's raw, chunky and evil sounding and has a hellish horror movie feel. The closest comparison I can think of is CASBAH on their first release - the live flexi. Especially Fear & Destruction song.

I'm curious about how the fellow corroseum members like this. So if the description made you interested - please download this and share your opinion. I love this album but I can see how someone could feel it's a bit repetitive or slow.

YES! A classic. And one of the harder to get Rock House Explosion LPs...

I got it due to the cool cover. The vocals have a charm to them, but for a thrash band they spend too much time in the 'two chords chug' space to be memorable in my opinion. It's more tone switches that are catchy than actual riffs, echoing the songwriting of Venom and such. There is some charm to their brand of savagery but I feel this has been done before, after, and most importantly, better, by others. If you play it loud enough it takes a sorta archetypal AAARGH I BREAK THINGS NO MERCIIIIEEEEEE KILL EACHOTHEEERRRR feel which is enjoyable for a while, but really why not listen to Carnivore for that sort of thing plus, they're humorous!

Well I think the most enjoyable thing on this album is the atmosphere.
Carnivore is great savage thrash but it's more like "ROAAAAAAAAAAARGH! I CRUSH YOUR SKULLLL!" -asshurted bear metal while Crest Of Black imo has a slightly different thing going on.
It's like a thrash metal soundtrack to a John Carpenter flick. I agree about the Venom influences. They're pretty obvious on songs like Friday Nightmare.

Hmmm, sounds kinda ineresting. What the heck, i haven't d/l anything from here in awhile...
EDIT- yeah, you pretty much pegged it. Slower thrash w/ more than a little Venom influence (comprable to traks like 'Warhead', which certainly isn't a bad thing). Great atmosphere but a little too simple/repetitive for its own good. I like it, but I don't know how much I'll listen to it. Thanks for posting it, definitely worth a few listens, and the cover is pretty badass IMO

As you and Helm pointed out - it's pretty simple and can get a little repetitive I guess. I can totally understand your views. I however like that the songs are some what similar. It makes the album feel more.. eh conceptual? There's also some personal things at work for me. I usually have to be in certain mood to listen to thrash metal or at least certain thrash metal albums. This album however I can listen to very easily. I don't know..maybe it's because it's so simple. I just keep coming back to this one every once in a while.
Another thing is that when I heard their two follow ups first and then after seeing the cover and reading about Crest Of Black I became highly interested of it. It took some time for me to get even a rip of this album so it felt great to finally hear it for the first time + it had this mystical "evil cult metal" aura.. Ridiculous or not.

Do you mean the demo tape with Friday Nightmare and Warfare? It's a good tape for sure but the tracks don't differ much from album versions so it's not essential imo. Still a nice thing to own. Don't know about the other demos if there are any?

If you look in the right place (japan) you can score this for about 40 dollars. not too bad. for some reason people outside of japan decided their records are worth about triple the value if they leave the country of origin.
