What 3 bands should breed the Alternate Timeline Heavy Metal

It seems a horrible mistake that I've never heard of Penance. I shall rectify this.

I think I could substitute something for Carnivore - Carnivore.

If it must be extrictly HM I would say

Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath (probably the best heavy metal album ever)
Saint Vitus - s/t (Doom should be present)
Medieval - Medieval Kills! (I know this last one is pretty unorthodox, but I'd choose it because from that record Thrash, Death and Black could be spawned and there's even some punky thing going on, so it would be a great influence)

If I can add other genres then it would be

Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath (probably the best heavy metal album ever)
Autopsy - Mental Funeral (kick ass Death Metal and Doom in one record, two birds at once)
Hellhammer - Demon Entrails (I guess I don't need to explain anything, except the fact that I don't need to explain anything)

Queensryche - Promised Land (prog the dark and beautiful way)
Watchtower - Control & Resistance (prog the hectic and violent way)

Raven - Rock Until You Drop
For the speed, confidence and energy. Get your Heavy Metal injection right here! This should influence some power, speed and even thrash metal me thinks.

Manilla Road - Crystal Logic
This will add the epic level definitely and it also has it's doom-elements, creativeness, passion and it never really loses it's focus (well except with Feeling Free Again maybe).

Mercyful Fate - Melissa I really really really wanted the third one to be a wild card. Something like HELL, RITUAL, MAX PLANCK or something but it has to be this. If the fuckers can't figure out some good ol' thrash metal from the raven-influences only then here it is. This'll also give them the evil imagery and darker side of metal. Plus I believe it's one of the best HM albums ever recorded.

Without comps Id need more then 3...if I were to pick 5 theyd be...

Purgatory - Tied To The Trax (so varied and mindblowing the entire time, would be influencial with its amazing guitar, falsetto screams, fast thrashy parts, intense heavyness, and CRUSHING stuff like Valley Of The Shadow Of Death)

Manilla Road - Crystal Logic (would influence power/traditional HM, plus it would be influencial in its amazing Epic qualities)

Black Hole - Land of Mystery (for its doomy, dark, abysmal atmosphere)

Darkified - A Dance On The Grave (I wouldnt want the future to be devoid of Death/Black metal...just devoid of the waves and waves of shitty death/black metal. If all post-apocalyptic death/black bands sounded like this we wouldnt have to worry about a resurgance in core-shit and other crap, and its atmosphere is amazing)

Fates Warning - The Spectre Within (for everything from the progressive and complicated songwriting, THE VOCALS, the immensely powerful last track, the guitar...and EVERYTHING else!)

I may consider switching some with stuff like...

You're right. Instead of the Keepers, I'll pick Gamma Ray - Land of the Free and Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle Earth. That'll add some variety.

Seriously though... I'll go with Angel Witch - Angel Witch (since Iron Maiden is banned, this is probably the next best thing) and a death or black metal album. Maybe Nocturnus - The Key, Sentenced - North From Here, or Bathory - Blood Fire Death.

Beautiful selections but, wouldn't a future full of technothrash and brooding progressive metal get kinda stale? Don't we need some simple and straightforward HM-for-courage-and-heart?

Also if you put Watchtower in there, people will just get dismayed and not even try to play like them, heh.

It seems Crystal Logic is a heavy preference. I'd agree, but I think if it were for ONE disk of this kind, I'd take Dark Quarterer - Dark Quarterer, as I find it a bit more approachable and it hits some stratospheric moods.

Melissa is also a heavy favorite, and it probably makes sense given how extremely amazing it is, yet not a lot of people took direct influence by them? I guess they can't all be as talented as King and co.

The Purgatory choice was a left-field one, really nice!

I'm really happy with the turnout!

My current 3 are:

Dark Quarterer - Dark Quarterer (instead of Killen or Cirith Ungol or Manilla Road)
Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Voivod - Killing Technology

Dark Quarterer - Mercyful Fate are a great dualist prism as DQ (or Manilla Road) are very white, whereas Fate are black as black can be. Voivod just bring the cosmic holistic effect! Also I am glad that it's an italian band, a dutch one and a canadian one! Too much US metal love in here!

I was about to write Crystal Logic in right away but Dark Quarterer might be better now that you mention it. Dark Quarterer is progressive,powerful and "epic" but also doomy,dark and full of mystery. I personally prefer Crystal Logic but I am having trouble picturing our post-civilization metalheads identifying with the upbeat optimism of "Feeling Free Again."

Virgin Steele- Invictus. (All kinds of heavy metal goodness can come out of this one)

Carnivore- Carnivore. (This will be relevant, useful and they can get some thrash/hardcore/doom out of eat.)

Bolt Thrower- Those Once Loyal. (I just can't resist. This will be essential! It can teach them the importance and beauty of maintaining your honour, valour and pride amidst the chaos, never to make the same mistakes again, fight for survival against overwhelming adversity and probably doom and death metal.)

Oh, well, I failed to include some straight forward thrash or anything from the prog side of life but I guess they'll probably develop their own Frankenstein monsters.
