What 3 bands should breed the Alternate Timeline Heavy Metal
What 3 bands should breed the Alternate Timeline Heavy Metal
We've had a similar thread before but this one is more specific as you'll see.
Something awful happens in the future and civilization is destroyed yada yada. If you were to save 3 records by 3 HM bands that the survivors would find and eventually emulate (when they get their electricity back) and breed new HM from them, which would they be? Remember, you don't want all the future Metal to sound samey, so there should be some variation between them that would allow for interesting new stuff to come to be.
Also the combo Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest is banned ;P
I'll post my 3 records later on.

OK, i understand why they are obviously excluded, so the 3 for me would be:
TYRANT - Too late to pray, For not letting people forget what have they done and brought their civilization to an end
RIOT - Thundersteel, Givin' up is NO option you bastards!
RUNNING WILD - Death or Glory, Never to forget what Freedom means
I know they don't sound as different as you would like, but when i have to choose only three albums all the other metal sub-genres must stand aside

Hmm.. let's see, avoiding the Big Three...
1- Angel Witch s/t. This album could be used to draw up blueprints for trad, doom, thrash, and power metal, so it would help re-launch Metal in many different directions. I think this is an essential quality b/c you don't want '1-trick pony' albums in this scenario. Plus it's a damn good listen
2- Motorhead no sleep 'til hammersmith. Not a personal favorite really, but the album exemplifies the gritty, dirty, simple, catchy, rock 'n roll side of heavy metal. From here it's a small step to re-inventing Venom, and once you have Venom the extreme metal genres will be a natural progression. I'm picking this particular Motorhead album b/c, as a live set, it reinforces the importance of live performances by Metal bands; this ain't meant to be sit-at-home-and-sip-wine music. Metal has an interactive community aspect to it.
3- Ozzy Osbourne blizzard of oz. I'm not really into this album, but I'm picking it for 1 reason: Randy Rhoads. The Guitar Hero is an integral part of HM, and I think it's important to preserve one example of true virtuoso axemanship. If the goal is to inspire a new generation of fans to re-invent the genre, what better inspiration than the man who inspired a huge number of metal musicians pre-apocalypse? I'm picking Rhoads over Yngwie simply b/c Rhoads has a more universal appeal that the rather pompous Malmsteem does. Once you have a new generatoin of guitar heroes, technical, faster, playing will natually develop, and thus power/speed will arise anew.

haha BlackStele and ION BRITTON, US METAL to be the only Alternate Timeline Metal there is?!
nightsblood excellent first two choices, especially how you explain them. There's much better guitar hero albums than Blizzard of Oz though, I think!
Here's my 3 picks:
Killen - Killen : Will breed all types of epic metal, fast and slow, but isn't as good as to be discouraging for new people to try to top this. None of my 3 albums are necessarily masterpieces, but I think they'd inspire people to fulfill the promises they might not have, with their own attempts.
Voivod - Killing Technology : both for reasons of civilization collapse and of course because speed, thrash, technothrash, death metal can be inferred through it. Yet it is approachable.
Fleurety - Min Tid Skal Komme : for all the more introspective types of HM to come, plus of course a dose of needed, aesthetically robust, romantic black metal.
BloodOfChrist: curse you and your compilation loophole! That's a whole different thread

Helm- I agree there are better guitar hero albums- I'm not a big fan of any of Ozzy's solo albums- but Rhoads has always had an inspirational appeal that transcends any one album he appeared on. Rhoads got people excited, while some guitar gods just put people to sleep, or at least never attained Randy's broad appeal. If you have to re-launch a genre, you gotta have exciting starting points to get people started.
Never got into Voivod but that's also a good call; bands could deconstruct the basic styles used but also see all kinds of avenues for expanding on their sound.
Based on sales figures, what 3 albums would most likely be found in the aftermath? Probably something like:
Metallica- s/t
Guns n Roses- appetite for Destruction
Def Leppard- hysteria

Penance - Parallel Corners (One of the most punishing Doom Metal albums ever. Teaching future metals' apostles the word of the HEAVY. Every post-apocalyptic drummers need to listen to this).
Razor - Violent Restitution (Grinding, fast and fantastic. Relieving the hyper tension of our populous)
Ritual - Valley Of The Kings (Not as punishingly powerful as the other two, it teaches the post-apocalyptic guitar hero how to maintain melody and passion in their guitar playing.)
Gloria Mundi.

Actually it is 2/3 US metal and 1/3 Euro metal. Dude, you had banned Priest, Maiden and Sabbath remember?
