This is an interesting debate, maybe a split would be good? Anyway, I totally agree with the "no to bonus tracks" argument as well as "no thanks to the remastering"! It totally detracts from the original album, the WAY IT WAS - a reissue with bonus tracks and remastering is a new album IMO, not the original one. I feel sorry for completists. If I can get the original CD I'll happily get rid of the reissue. Vinyl is preferable of course but sometimes it's good to have the CD to play to spare the vinyl!
Well that makes it more understandable. Actually when I first heard Crystal Logic (in 1988) I had only heard (and fallen in love with) The Deluge before and me and my friends couldn't help from bursting out in laugther when Necropolis started. We were 16 at the time not used to this kind of sounds. Still at the same time I was completely taken by the magic melodies and the haunting images this music was bringing forth. The initial impression soon made us look at each other in silence in deep mutual understanding that we had struck gold. The friend who had found Crystal Logic had also bought Open the Gates that same day so we had a great evening in front of us (I got Tyran Pace - Long Live Metal, Witchcross - Fit to Fight and Fates Warning - Night on Bröcken).Levi wrote:Probably has to do with the fact that I first heard the album as the reissue cd and got the vinyl later on. So I always found it pretty fitting (don't think the difference in production is that big) and I miss it when putting on the vinyl versionGJ wrote:I can't! How could you? The production of FMS is completely different to the album tracks. They could have put it at the end instead - or even better put it on a bonus disc or making it an independent release as a CD-single.Levi wrote:I only can think of 1 example where that turned out good: Flaming Metal System on the Iron Glory reissue of Crystal Logic.
Anyway I feel that Flaming Metal System (although being a great track with a quite fitting production) lacks the dryness of the Crystal Logic album and seem to have a lot of midrange rather that extreme discant and bass (saying this I have to add that I'm in no way a HiFi'y kind of person and probably lacking both ear and words for this kind of discussions...) - and therefore would be better of on it's own.
I've specifically gotten rid of the majority of my vinyl over the last few years based on the fact that CD's are a way more compatible and convenient format.Nightlock wrote:If you want the original with original track listing I'd say always go the vinyl
My vinyl collection is only sitting at around 400 or so records and they remain in crates.
Hell, my turn table hasn’t even been functioning properly since I've last moved 1 1/2 months ago…
Vinyl is nice, under ideal circumstances, but it's hard to handle under my lifestyle.

Completely understandable man, I've notice you mention that you move around quite a bit before. I've thought quite a few times about what I'd do if I want to go traveling for an extended period about my ever-growing collection/If I wanted to live overseas for a while. It's getting harder to move everytime I move too (Which is every few years - but I'll probably move early next year)Avenger wrote:I've specifically gotten rid of the majority of my vinyl over the last few years based on the fact that CD's are a way more compatible and convenient format.Nightlock wrote:If you want the original with original track listing I'd say always go the vinyl

Those are exactly the kind of "bonus" tracks I hate. Especially the tracks from Into Battle. All of those songs were already on the album! How is it a bonus if it's already on there? I guess the bonus tracks on Black Death are cool if you don't have Defender of the Crown... But if you're a Brocas Helm fan, you probably do have it.Levi wrote:Bonus tracks are indeed nice in a way. Like for instance the Brocas Helm demo tracks on the Eat Metal reissues.
I got the eat metal reissue of into battle dirt cheap from iordan so I am not complaining, I didn't really like the helms deep demo on there as a bonus, but I see no reason to avoid reissues with bonus tracks if they didn't mess up the sound if they remastered it, just burn a copy with the original album tracks and be done with it, its good to have a back up to listen to anyway so you don't fuck up the original, I don't care how careful someone is with a cd or vinyl if they listen to it enough it will get scratches or scuffs.DMR wrote:Those are exactly the kind of "bonus" tracks I hate. Yeah, but it's good quality, so I can live with it. Plus the video is kinda cool. Most of the time I would prefer no bonustracks, but if they put some on and it is decent quality, I won't complain. Push stop when the 'real album' endsDMR wrote:Those are exactly the kind of "bonus" tracks I hate. Especially the tracks from Into Battle. All of those songs were already on the album! I like the into battle demo a lot, but the helms deep demo can fuck off, I wish they would have included the black death demo instead.doomedplanet wrote:"Into Battle" demo is great and anyone that thinks otherwise has to be insane, haha. The reason you have to have them is that they are different recordings, doh!
