Old School Swedish Death Metal bands!!!

Post by King Zombie »

It is my favourite scene, and my favourite vareiant of death metal, sometimes melodic, sometimes aggresive with thrashier rawness, obscure style and malevolence. What are your favourite bands? And which bands forefathered it?

My List:

Carnage
Crematory
Morbid
Crypt Of Kerberos
House Of Usher
Entombed
Unleashed
Dismember
Obscure Infinity
Liers In Wait
Hetsheads
Nirvana 2002
Moral Decay
Moribund
Therion
Obscurity
Hypocrisy

Your turn now!!!

Grave (I love the strings-hanging-off guitar sound on the Anatomia Corporis Humani demo/EP)
Crematory
Desultory
Evocation
Utumno
Gorement
Macrodex
Unanimated
General Surgery
Grotesque (and At the Gates - the Gardens of Grief 12" is an all-time favourite)
Concrete Sleep
Abhoth
Adversary
"His name's Antichrist Vandelay. He's an insulter-expulser."

THE all-time favourite for me. First time I heard them was when they opened for BOLT THROWER on their "Warmaster" tour. This was before the release of their MLP and their first gig outside Gothenburg if memory serves me right. Their unique, bombastic sound and Tompa's insane stage antics shitshocked us all and when he dedicated "At The Gates" to Pelle Dead (the word of his suicide had gotten out the very same day) you couldn't help getting a wee bit verklemmt.

Unfortunately the crap production on "The Red In The Sky Is Ours" made me loose interest in them later and when they got back on track I was lost on other musical pastures...

Yup. From Gothenburg if I remember correctly. Not sure if I've ever heard the LP, but their demo was hilariously bad

I think it wasn't so bad. One track was especially good. Jure (No Name 'zine) even put it on his The Bridge compilation.

To be honest, I have never been a big fan of the swedish sound. Of course, the big ones are amazing and I hear their music all the time (by the big ones, I mean Nihilist/Entombed, Grave, etc). From Carnage I like the demos better than the album. But I find bands like Funebre (who were actually from Finland if I'm not wrong) or Rottrevore (who were from the USA) that tried to imitate that swedish sound, pretty much boring.

I fucking love this old school Scandinavian death metal stuff but I've never really took the time to dig deep into it. I haven't even heard half of the bands mentioned in this thread. I'm afraid to buy that Swedish death metal book

Mostly every band mentioned here is awesome. I think Demilich can be added to the list of great Finnish death metal bands. I admit it took me awhile to get past those vocals but it's worth it. Another band that should be mentioned is Sweden's Repugnant! I know they are a recent band but they play some of the best old school death metal I have heard in a long time. I still want to get the vinyl release of Epitome of Darkness but I really cannot afford to order from Europe right now..which sucks.

Those who love the old school Swedish Death Metal should check out the band Graveyard from Spain. They recorded a great demo that's being rereleased as vinyl and CD. Very good stuff in the Swedish vein.
