deliverance - devil's meat

Post by khiijol »

been listening to this one a lot lately and finally managed to secure a copy for a decent price. killer album (and legendary cover art), does anyone know anything that is remotely similar to this sort of thing musically? the only thing that i can think of is nme, but even they are pretty far removed from the plane that deliverance were on

To this day I still don't know what to think about the album. As much as I love "Evil Friendship", "Devil's Meat" remains an enigma. Was it a joke? Had these people ever even heard Metal before? No, I can't think of anything that sounds like this album, not even their later stuff...

For those too lazy to look it up - my old rambling on "Devil's Meat":

Although the main reason this album qualify as a Metalploitation album is the sound, I gotta start off by telling U about the cover. I don't usually hang record covers on my wall coz they tend to get skewed, but I made an exception with this one. It's really outrageous, no fancy graphics, not even a band logo, just a photo of a young girl age 7-10 on a white background, wearing a red piece of cloth, an old metal necklace, dead stare, blood trail from the mouth and the title "devil's meat" written in blood on her forehead. As genious as it is simple. And the music? MY GOD! Who are these people?!!? It's like a bunch of ol' geezers heard of "this new hep thang cal' Dev'l Met'l" and tried to do it on their own without even one hint of how to produce a metal record, it's like CELTIC FROST played by inbred rednecks brought up on crap-NWOBHM like RAVEN and DIAMOND HEAD, it's BRILLIANT!!!. Unintentional originality - don't U just love it?

that review is pretty dead on (although i will disagree about your assessment of raven... "rock until you drop" and "wiped out" are killer). i checked out "evil friendship", and while its a good album, it doesn't have the "Wtf" factor of devil's meat. i need to give it a couple more listens for it to fully sink in as its own entity. were the later deliverance albums released on vinyl? and if so, how easy are they to find?

Yeah, they've grown on me since the 10 years I wrote that review

3rd album "Book of lies" is the only DELIVERANCE album that exist on both LP and CD as far as I know. The style is like a more "calmed down" version of "Evil Friendship" with some added King Diamond-influences. Good one, but personally my least favourite of the 3.

They also made a best-of CD in the early 90's w/ some later demo tracks added. This exclusive material is quite disappointing - not much of their "creepiness" left I'm afraid - and the songs taken from the albums sound muffled, like they we're taken from some crappy tape copy.

Strangely these days one album i heard for the first time was Devil's Meat.I was
curious about them so i tried them and they are very, very good the production is good but the album lacks sometimes from real HM spirit(some crappy metal influences there) but generally it's a good band.My favourite track ''Your Death''
what an opening riff! 8)

Now i'll be mean!I can't understand at all all this hype about Deliverance. What's so important about them? They can't play music, their ''music'' isn't 100% metal(something in their influences pisses me off).
OK it is not the production(i've heard a lot worser) but generally this band hasn't
logical inspiration as for it's music goes.To me their sound is like they improvising trying to play something they don't know.Devil's Meat has ONLY two highlights and nothing absolutely else the GODLY cover and the riffs/song ''Your Death''.
As for ''Evil Friendship'' album this is totally unhearable pure crap.Black Metal originators?Yes they did a good work in sampling evil sound clips!Haha they were many, many more Satanic bands way before them.Maybe the most overrated Corroseumic band.

Now i gonna listen some Evil Blood!!!!To heal myself!

P.S that is my opinion(after hearing their album after some months).Do you agree or disagree?

I can understand fully if someone thinks "Devil's Meat" blows. It is a very crude record and the overall sound is weird and confusing, but "Evil Friendship" deserves all the hype. Perhaps some songs aren't as great as some others and perhaps the sound/pressing of the album isn't the best, but the killer, dark, original & atmospheric parts outweights the weaker ones by far.

Especially the first part of Evil Friendship blows my mind. They sound something like Mercyful Fate, Death SS and early Sodom gets together and decides to make a tribute album to Possessed. :P

I just realized (after all this time!) that I have the same weird trinket that the girl is wearing around her neck (without the inverted cross)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got it from my American/Mexican uncle when I was young! I think it may be Mexican? To me it kinda looks like a skeleton of some sort??
Strange, but true!
I'll try and post a pic, when I get around to it... along with some of my collection in the TOP ITEMS post.. one day.. soon... hopefully.. eventually.. I promise.. kinda..

I incidentally discovered their gutarist, he is a famous AOR artist nowadays. Apparently they were a tongue-in-a-cheek band, and as such (look at Bathory or Exorcist) managed to create something very fresh and unique which became total cult... it is unfortunate the only accessible copies of their albums are the Greek bootlegs... I BADLY need to find a Devil's Meat LP with poster!
