100 CD-Rs Later...

Post by nightsblood »

...all the music on my hard drive is backed up with a disc copy. This would've been a lot easier with a dvr drive

NOT REALLY !

An external Hard Drive would be easier !
Nowadays it's even cheaper than CD-Rs !

I have 'em on an extrenal hard drive as well, but I wanted 'hard copy' backups. What can I say? I'm paranoid AND got a crapload of cdr's on sale during the holidays (circuit city had packs of 50 for $5)

I have most of my music backed up on DVD's. But I like the idea of a cheap external hard drive, have to look into those. A few years ago they were very expensive.

An External Hard Drive is the only way.

Having thousands of CD-R's would be a lost cause in my case.

have in mind CD-R's are not safe.

There's a pretty good possibility some of them will go with read errors not long in the future (usually 1-2 years ..)

Right now I have 3 external hard drives. If I couldnt get them id be so completely fucked...especially since my computer died and had to be replaced 5-6 times in the last couple of years. External hard drives kick ass, especially because theyre easy to transport. Bringing 200 gigs of metal to any frinds house and copying/pasting is way easier then burning cd-rs and getting errors that ruin the disc more then half the time you try to burn one. I dont know if its just my computer being shitty, but I had a giant problem with that like 4 years ago, and afterwards I realized that all the cd-rs didnt work. I spent like $80 on cd-rs that were wasted and I lost my entire collection of stuff from the internet (and my own rips that I had to re-do, which sucked and took a long time)....

I went with CD-r's around 2003. Before that I always bought 2 over everything, I know is classic, and spends alot of time in my CD player. Then I went to CD-R's in a attempt to double the growth rate of my collection, and give some contender and up and coming artist a chance. This was a bad choice.

The Cd-R's are pretty shitty, worse than cassettes in my opinion, now if I want to have something around for along time, I just buy 2 of everything. sometimes I just buy 2 copies out right. And other times. I just wait for a $7.00 copy to make its way into the second hand store. I always like having mint booklets, so if one starts to go bad, I replace that CD right away.

I switched from cassette and vinyl 1979-1997, (I stopped buying newer music back in 1992-1997 when vinyl was being phased out...even then Abattoir meant everything and modern metal meant nothing) to CD in 1997...so I am stuck with CD's because it would cost me more to go back to vinyl, considering all my favorite albums on CD cost way more nowadays on vinyl. I just wonder when the next medium will come around to usurp CD's. If the record labels do away with physical releases all together. I will stop buying music current and just concentrate the old bands who were World Class.

I talked alot to people who have put there collections on IPODS..and sold there whole "physical" CD collection. I think there kind of nuts...I do not trust any back-up system.
