1990s or 2000s?

So what decade do you think has been better for Metal? And why?

And it seems it's all going to continue next decade as well...

If I had to choose from those two options it would be the 1990's but only from the period of 1990-1992 due to the huge amount of awesome latecomer thrash releases during that time.

I have to admit that I'm rather ignorant on this topic being that I literally don't listen to anything released after 1992.

90s because of, as avenger said, many great thrash releases + later Grave Digger albums were better than their first few

Agree to an extent about the thrash releases but at that stage most thrash was the super sterile angry political thrash which isn't my favourite style of thrash.

The worst (so-called)genre's of metal appeared in the 90s, but it was the 90s underground heavy metal scene that meant the survival of heavy metal forever!

There was no good Grave Digger release after "Heavy metal Breakdown" (which is the standard) and "Witch Hunter"..."Shoot her down"....

Same for Running Wild.....the first Lps were the metal standard for a whole generation/movement.....

I love sloppy 80's Grave Digger as much as the next man but they are one of the few bands of the 90's German Power/Speed Metal scene that I really like. Running Wild is all mostly 9-10/10 stuff from '84 - '96, I adore the Death or Glory - Masquerade era of the band. The pirate theme isn't cheesy either!!!!

they're mostly historically correct raw songs, Running Wild have always been heavy and true! Rolf is the coolest loner vegan metalhead

I love the early 90's old school death metal, so I guess I'll go for the 90's. But really, there are releases from every era that I can appreciate.

90's, with many classic death metal bands and the second wave of black metal. And with the last really good albums of the 80s heavy metal bands like Running Wild, Judas Priest etc, all these until '95-'96. Then...

Agree w/ Nightlock; all Running WIld is good, but Death or Glory through Masquerade is just incredible.

I'll also pick the 90s. Granted, Metal had its problems in the 90s. In the US, the first half of the decade was overrun with generic Florida death metal and boring, post-thrash stuff like Nevermore, Pantera, Biohazard, and later Sepultura. The last half of the decade saw too many retro- movements with copycat bands trying to resurrect Euro- and thrash metal (coughcoughHammerfallcough), and the less said about Nu Metal the better!
Still, there was a good set of Euro/power bands going strong in the early 90s (Blind Guardian, Iced Earth before they started to suck, Conception, Heavens Gate, etc), Gothenberg made death metal listenable, and Black Metal was reinvented in Norway.
I'm hard-pressed to think of any great Metal contributions during the 00s. Metalcore and myspace 'bedroom bands' seem to be the biggest 'innovations' :lol There have been some excellent albums made this decade, but they seem fewer and farther between, and bands seem less consistent from album to album.

i misut say, this decade (2000) is imoortant because of the huge interest in the classic metal movement of the 80s, so there a los of new bands coming from around the world doing good old-school music.....but its true, not all of them are good,and lots of people are just part of the trend....

90's with their knack for experimental and progressive (in subgenres other than progressive Metal). Sound was still OK at the time and minimalism haven't took over yet.

Early 90's (1990-1993) is quite interesting, it was one of the best period for Death Metal ! They were killer releases : NOCTURNUS ("The Key" & "Thresholds"), MESSIAH ("Choir of Horrors"), CARCASS ("Necroticism"), MALEVOLENT CREATION ("The 10 Commandments"), BOLT THROWER ("Warmaster" et "The 4th Crusade"), the list can go on and on with Death Metal masterpieces from that era ...
