TORR: Witchhammer demo (1987)

Post by The Sentinel »

I bought this one on LP recently and man that was a good decision. First listen was OK, but after I while I was totally hooked on this one. It's not something really special BUT the overall atmosphere and crushing raw sound make this a winner. The first songs already make your head bang into random objects; pure metal filth, Great!!! Someone else digging this?

Shit, now I'm curious about that NWN Root demo box. Are those demos in the same league as this Torr demo?

I bought the Root Dema box, it totally kicks ass, unfortunately I couldn't order the die-hard version directly from them and had to purchase the regular version on a distro nearby. It's cool to hear Amon's Dr. Fe in it's early years in Root and the Boss on the messy drums :D.
It's quite dirty material there and you get to hear tracks that later made into their 1st LP, I recommend it, if the seal of NWN didn't convinced you enough :D.

Back on topic.

I've seen that demo LP around, I'm lacking founds at the time, but I'll definitely buy it as soon as I can.

In a side note I bought Torritorium in the end of 2006 and it was a pretty bad album, so if you feel tempted to buy new Torr material, hear it first.
By the way, if someone wants to trade it, I'm available ha ha.

I remember hearing it and liking it better than the first LP, I'm gonna check it out again.
The 666 demo was cool too. I have it for upload if anybody is interested.

I got the double lp the other day, great record. I was surprised when inside the cover the band calls this demo the first black metal recording ever in their country. This is not Black metal to me, it is just great old dirty thrash.

Just curious if you think like I do then. Do you consider VENOM the first Black Metal band? I've gotten flamed for saying it, but I don't...

I don't know, never thought about it. I do know that when the sound changed to that really typical raspy BM voice and garbage can sounding production was when I really started to hate BM. Even though "Welcome to hell" is fairly lo-fi it is the first really extreme album like it I ever heard back in 1985 when I was 15. my memory of then is that it sounded like it was recorded in a dungeon.

A lot of people consider VENOM and MERCYFUL FATE Black Metal. I don't. I think those the first bands + a few others highly influenced the genre though.

I like Törritorium. It has some bright spots, more than Made In Hell.

I need that Demo DLP. Has the 93' Studio recording that sound failure from the Monitor press? I think it's in the song "Rock N Roll"... a 3 second loud "FEEEEEEEEEEEEE" in the later part of the song.
Even the 2Tape "Gallery" compilation from 1998 didnt corrected that. Annoying.
