DaN and Aaron joined me for tonight's HEAVY METALLURGY stream and they showed some awesome, obscure metal titles

Another big thanx to Alan and Marty (by proxy) for having me - and so cool to finally getting to chat w/ Aaron about Rare Steel
...and apologies for the crap sound & video on my part. My pc camera died at the last minute and I had to use my crappy old phone. Will be fixed until next time(?) I promise...

Re: GOOD YouTube channels?
I'll save watching this ep 'til the weekend so i can view it from start to finish in a single sitting without interruption. 3 hour episodes are great, but i tend to wind up watching them in 2 or 3 sittings as my arse falls asleep half way through, or i lose concentration as i start watching too late in the day.

Re: GOOD YouTube channels?
Just discovered that Nightsblood (aka 'Alan Of Melnibone') guested on the 'Killing For Company' stream a few months back specifically to dissect the latest Cirith Ungol album but they get into the entire Ungol oeuvre along the way.

Excellent episode – I’m enjoying watching these. Thank you DaN for reminding me about the Root boxset, it’s been a while since I’ve listened to these records.DaN wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2024 5:40 pm My bad conscience for not bringing up this in time and keeping up w/ stuff here in general knows no bounds, but anyways:
Really pleased w/ this one. Always loved this theme and the albums and discussions turned out grrrreat. Eternal Hails to Marty & Alan for once again having me![]()
At the risk of sounding a bit pedantic – I think it’s interesting how Satanism typically gets tied to the term evil. There’re two categories that Satanism fits into – first is the ‘comic book’ version which is largely inspired by the fictional Taxil Hoax, Maurice Bessy’s art, and French Literature (i.e., La-Bas). The second is the stuff Lavey wrote, which is mostly plagiarized – he ripped off Ayn Rand, Nietzsche, and copied word-for-word “Might is Right” in the Satanic Bible. Satanism is essentially a rebellious version of Objectivism, combined with some lite-Nietzsche. With that said, I disagree with Alan that Running Wild aren’t “Satanic”- as they exemplify most of these principles in their lyrics.
I think a great example of Evil would be the most of the Lovecraftian stuff – the “Cosmic Dread” he wrote about. Taipan- The Cellar & Black Hole’s material comes to mind.

Here are two ones:
- 1. - Heavy Metal of the Eastern Bloc, https://www.youtube.com/@heavymetalofeasternbloc , whose owner has a channel dedicated to old Hard Rock and Rock from the ex-Soviet Bloc;
2. - Untergrund Tube, only live shows, from all genres of Rock and all dates, but with many good Metal shows, https://www.youtube.com/@UntergrundTube

DaN- thanks for posting the link here, I forgot to. The EVIL METAL show turned out great.
'Kit- thanks for osting the Cirith Ungol list. Kellen's channel is quite good, he just doesn't make a lot of videos.
Glad folks are enjoying some of the links I posted and some of the Heavy Metallurgy and Let's Talk Metal content.
Something I should mention: a couple of people have asked why more European folks haven't been featured on Heavy Metallurgy or Let's Talk Metal. It's the time zone difference. HM is done live at 9:00 pm New York time, and I usually record LTM content in the evenings so again, around 9:00 pm NY time. Marty and I would like to feature more European guests, but as dads who work a lot it's rare that we have time to record content in the morning or middle of the day, when we could coordinate with someone in the UK or Europe during their waking hours. Marty and I have discussed trying to pre-record some HM episodes to accommodate guests in Europe. We may be able to do so in the future but our weekends are often very busy. Huge cheers to DaN for being willing to defy the laws of Time to join us live on occasion- for those about to nap, we salute you!
Vessel- interesting idea about Running Wild fitting more into the Levay version of Satanism, I hadn't thought of them fitting into that style. I tried to include a few bands, such as Behemoth, who do exemplify that approach to Satanism. Now I'm wondering if the Satanic Church would be more popular if the dress code was pirate themed?
Re: Running Wild, I don't think they fit the 'cartoon satanism' version of Black Metal well since almost all references to Satan were gone before their second album. I think people severely overestimate how much 'stereotypical Satan' is featured on BRANDED AND EXILED. That means their Black Metal period is basically limited to the EP and GATES TO PURGATORY. I'm pretty sure the cartoon Satan requires a greater display of loyalty than a single studio album before moving on to other lyrical content if you wanna get his endorsement and call yourself a tr00 Black Metal band LOL

Hi Alan, it had to be done, it should be mandatory viewing for any Corroseite. You both did a great job with that video, plenty there for new initiates & longtime fans alike to enjoy. A pat on the back is in the mail.

I particularly enjoyed your brainwave that the initials in the title of 'Velocity (S.E.P.)' might stand for 'Sexy Elric Pose'.

Speaking of the cover, does it seem to anyone else that Elric's crouching leg ought to be bulging more at the thigh & calf. Far be it for me to criticize Michael Whelan, but my eye is always drawn to it as looking a little 'off'. For the sake of balance, it took me a while to spot the likeness of the insect critter from 'One Foot In Hell' emblazoned on the pillar beside Elric. A very cool hidden 'easter egg' detail that would look great in isolation on C.U. merch.

Please remember to quiz DaN on his 707 inches Of Swedish Steel piece. That was my intro to a lot of the great Swedish 45s at a time when no-one was talking about those records. I doubt i'm the only one who discovered that stuff first through that essential article. Thanks & praise are DuE.

Re: GOOD YouTube channels?
I'm only about a quarter of the way through the Swedish Metal epidode thus far, but am enjoying it a lot. Great work as usual fellas.
Re the discussion about Swedish language Metal, i wondered if there were perhaps incentives of some description back in the day for bands who sang in Sverige?
Maybe something similar to what was happening in Wales around the same time where there were financial & commercial possibilities available to support & promote bands using their native tongue in the form of grants & radio airplay?
I'm sure there were similar schemes afoot in other countries around the globe that gave bands a leg up, such as in Canada whose radio stations had to feature at east 50% homegrown artists on their playlists which benefitted the Canuck music scene greatly.
I've no facts to back up this notion, but Sweden strikes me as the sort of place that may well have had a similar cultural 'safety net' of some kind.

Re: GOOD YouTube channels?
I think the incentive to sing in Swedish was mostly cultural. At least in the 70's and early 80's, 90% of the bands at your rehearsal place and/or scene was probably singing in Swedish, regardless of genre. As I mentioned in the stream, it was mostly the old prog and the newer punk scene who hold on to this tradition the dearest, so some peer pressure was surely involved...bigfootkit wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 5:56 amRe the discussion about Swedish language Metal, i wondered if there were perhaps incentives of some description back in the day for bands who sang in Sverige?

Re: GOOD YouTube channels?
Interesting, and surprising to me that it was the (supposed) polar opposites of Prog & Punk that had/have the strongest tradition of singing in Swedish.DaN wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 8:07 pmI think the incentive to sing in Swedish was mostly cultural. In the UK i suppose it was the folk revival of the 60's that led to the reemergence of the Welsh language & Irish & Scottish Gaelic tongues in contemporary music which then was carried on into the 70's & 80's (particularly in Wales) through Prog, HM & Punk bands.
Was there a similar folky thing going on in Scandinavia back then that perhaps provided a fresh boost to the idea of Scandi singing or was it a tradition which had remained relatively unbroken ?
