I was going to bring this up right now actually. Have you heard their 2 super-rare comp tracks? The track from Northcoast Steel (1988) is total thrash, as is the track from Convicted To The Avant Garde (1989). The only problem is that the vocals on the "Convicted..." track are overly low and hard to hear.DaN wrote:Christian lyrics/themes in Doom doesn't bother me one bit. They contrast the dark & gloomy music rather well imo, the same way the 100% White Metal lyrics of MESSIAH are perfect for their ultra-melancholic, godly music.
Classic Heavy Metal is another story. The tarnish on the otherwise perfect 10/10 GLACIER mlp is the slightly christian slant. I actually sent an interview to an old GLACIER member long ago (he said he would be happy to answer it) but never got a reply. In retrospect I wonder if it was because of the 1-2 Q's about their Xian message..
The best White Metal lyrics I've read were probably by CENTURION on their "Cross And Black" LP. Profound without being pretentious or preachy. The weird vocals fit them very well too.
I was so close to scoring a free copy of this LP, sealed, but I never heard back from the guy who had offered to send it. Damnit....

Now that you mention it I remember seeing a compilation LP long ago w/ a CENTURION-song, but I think it was too expensive for me at the time. Classic Metal bands turning Thrash more often than not turn out as major disappointments. Are these 2 comps worth searching out for other reasons? How are the rest of the bands?BloodOfChrist wrote:I was going to bring this up right now actually. Have you heard their 2 super-rare comp tracks? Fuck, I actually just got a 2nd copy of one of them for a friend in France, that was the last one available. Sorry about that...
The comps are "Northcoast Steel: Cleveland HM 1988" and "Convicted To The Avant Garde". They are both awesome. "Northcoast..." is the last of the "big 3" of 80s Cleveland Metal comps (the first 2 being 1983s "Cleveland Metal" LP and 1984s "Cleveland's Heavy Metal: Etched In Steel"). Northcoast not only includes Centurion's best song, it includes NIGHTCRAWLER (the band that released "Soldier In Time"), ROADIES NIGHTMARE, which kicks ass and includes Paul Kostyack (later ANTITHESIS), it also includes BATTERY (Andy Boyers band pre-PURGATORY....formerly VIOLENT WIND). It also has a kickass track from ROUGH HONOR, who were all in thier late teens at the time. FRAGILE were a lot better then I expected after the cheesy intro. SAVAGE has a riff that sounds extremely similar to BRICK MISTRESS's "P.O.W.", but the vocalist can sound pretty gay sometimes (although he has a nice scream).
Overall the comp is very worth tracking down. Centurion, Battery, Roadies Nightmare, Nightcrawler, and Rough Honor are all awesome. Fragile is pretty damn good except for the cheesiness, Savage suffers because of singers occassional gay shit (the instruments are awesome, though). Absolute Zero is weird, and has 2 members that are now in a band with Mark from PURGATORY.
CONVICTECD TO THE AVANT GARDE has some really fucking obscure bands. MUTANT SOLDIER kicks ass, SEVERE WARNING kicks ass (a full MS/SW show is on its way to me right now). NIGHTCRAWLER also has an awesome track here, as does CENTURION. RAGING GRACE destroys as usual. but their track on "Distant Thunder: Sounds Of The Cleveland Metal Storm", another obscure Underground Express Records cassette comp, was better. SINISTER is fucking good, and includes Pat from MYSTIK. PARALYSER is funny/weird with screechy vocals and a drummer that murdered his whole family with a shotgun (dead serious). The song has pretty awesome riffs and solos, so even though their a funny band theyre still good. Their demo was uploaded on Miskatonic a few months ago (thanks Greg!). I have no idea what the fuck happened to MADDOXX but I wish I had more material from them. LETHAL CONCEPTIONs 2 song demo appears here in its entirety...with ex-SYNASTRYCHE, FALSE HOPE, and DIABOLICUS (what ever happened to them?) members....2 of which would spend a short time in POSSESSED. SYNASTRYCHE is faster then normally here, and frankly not nearly as good as thier debut demo, which was awesome. The Synastryche track is a dissapointment. The Spudmonsters are a lot more bearable then their Heavy Artillery track...i still dont know why they were included on so many comps in the late 80s. Heavy Artillery, "Convicted...", METAL MASSACRE (What the fuck!?).
Anyway, both comps are mostly awesome, except with a few weak tracks (Pretty Vacant, Synastryche, etc.).
The Sinister track sounds better then the version from thier demo tape, since the tape was not the best quality at all.
If you look on Miskatonic you can see some flyers and shit that I posted from old Underground Express bands and shows, such as NITEFALL, RAGING GRACE, MERCURY, MUTANT SOLDIER, BATTERY, TORMENT, BREAKER, etc.

Heres CENTURIONs track of Northcoast Steel. Its (in my opinion at least) the best thing theyve ever done.

Ok, so I broke down and bought a copy of 'Soldiers Under Command' (can't believe i'm saying that on a public forum
).... and I have to say, I don't hate it like I did in the 80s... but here's the review:
First and last songs on side one: really good
Second song on side one: Great hooks, but embarassingly heavy-handed, I'm not quite sure I can hang......
Third song: forgettable
Fourth song: The most intolerable ballad I've heard in a long time. Complete shit.
Haven't made it to side 2 yet.
So I don't know... maybe Stryper made half a solid record, but man, I'm starting to think that Valor and Messiah were onto something with their weird production not only because they sound cool anyway, but also because the "message" isn't shoved in yer face quite how it is with the pristine production...... then again, it's really not the content of the lyrics, it's the presentation. I don't know.......... Watch, in a month or two I'll post again and it will be one of my favorite records, God knows (get it?) that Mistreated record, which I dearly love, is pretty indefensible.........

I'm a hardcore atheist myself, but I think the following albums are killer pieces of White Metal:
Saint - "Time's End"
Saint - "Warriors of the Son"
Bloodgood - s/t
Bloodgood - "Detonation"
Yeah, the lyrics bug me every now and then, but I'll admit I love these records. I also remember Bride's "Show no Mercy" and "Live to Die" being good, but I haven't pulled those tapes out in years.

Are you on drugs?? Metallic Jeezuz-praisin' rarely got any more blatant.BlackStele wrote:MESSIAH-FINAL WARNING(NOT 100% Chistrian Metal imo..)
This particular album is imo one of those Metallic Masterpieces where the Xian slant actually improved the listening experience. I just don't belive this album would have turned out the way it did if it weren't for their religious delusions & angst.

NO, I'm not on drugs...ARE YOU?? This album, has Christian lyrics, but the music is not 100% White Metal. It has some Hard Rock elements mixed with mid-tempo Heavy tunes, and imo, this is a REAL underrated Masterpiece, that many look down on, as simple as that._DaN wrote:Are you on drugs??
