Pressing variations pt. 1: COMBAT

There's lots of label-variant mysteries that need solving when you think about it, like which of the early Metal Blade pressings were the first - Yellow labels or Silver? Or the green, black and silver label variants of the early Shrapnel stuff?

This is absolutely something we should all get together on an try to formulate a definitive chronological order of. The label variations drive me insane sometimes. I just came across another one the other day (Celtic Frost "To Mega.." with a green Combat label that I've not seen before (most are all camo). What do you think?

Yes, let's sort this mess out once and for all. I guess COMBAT is as good a place to star as any. I'm thinking I'm gonna add this info to the label pages on the site eventually..

Main concerns:

- Which releases exist only on green labels? Which on cammo only? Which had both? Are there other designs?
- Any barcode/no barcode- or other sleeve-variations?


Edit: Here's the full (?) vinyl list up until their last vinyl release, in a slim text version. I suggest we just add "green label", "camo label", "barcode", "no barcode" etc at the end of each line. Copy in extra lines for multiple versions. I'll have to start going through my own collection tomorrow, gotta run off to work in a few minutes..

I cannot answer your questions specifically without digging. If you settle on how you want to present the data on your website and process what you have in your collection first, I'm willing to audit and check my collection against that, either adding/verifying or scanning any data you are missing. It looks like I have the bulk of the Combat releases, though I'm guessing I don't have US pressings of Venom records and I see I'm missing some of the hardcore titles and almost all of the cds.

The question of which versions came first we'll settle after we've sorted out how many versions exist of each vinyl, but afaik the green labels came first and the camo later. Anyone heard differently?

So just to confirm, do you just want a list from me and no matrix codes, but notation of barcode versus no barcode? Or do you want label scans too? If that is the case I prefer to wait and see what scans you have gathered so I don't replicate that effort.

I'm thinking you (or anyone else) could check your Combat vinyls for 2 things: label design and barcode or not. These are basically the 2 most common and easiest-to-check identifiers of different pressings from most labels, so atm I don't think it's necessary to go deeper than that (maybe if some odditities/???'s appear along the way). No need for photos or scans, just list any version you have not yet on the list, in the same manner, i.e:

"I have:
Exciter - Long Live The Loud - LP - 1985 - camo labels, no barcode
Venom - Welcome To Hell - LP - 1985 - white label, barcode.."
etc

I won't have time to continue googling for versions for a few days, so anyone is welcomed to continue that work too, as long as they post picture links as source.

I guess you don't consider them metal enough to be on the list? I do of course... I have seen a yellow vinyl version of this record too, but it was expensive so I missed it. Though a look on discogs and it seems that color vinyl must be a German pressing on different label.

Yeah I'm not sure why that one would be repressed. Maybe they were conservative on initial pressing and then with change in distribution or something it was repressed. It does seem a fairly common release.

I'm really pissed I never bought that Death lp as a combat pressing. I used to see that fucker everywhere and in my mind I must have passed on it because I see I have a first press cd and a picture disc . pd sound crummy but I must have just decided I didn't need to buy it for a 3rd time. Now it seems fairly desirable and I need it...I remember buying that cd at full retail as a new release when it came out too, but the lp was not available where I lived.

Combat originals can be really tricky to come by over here, esp if they've also been released on Roadrunner, MFN etc.. Took me ages to find basic stuff like Abbatoir, Agent Steel etc..

Anyways, I just discovered there are different versions of the gray camo labels (and probably the other standard labels) as well - i.e. different pressings, not just manufacturing variations. I'm gonna put together some sort of simple overview on the Combat page on the site in the next week or 2. Stay tuned..

I can confirm that the following has NO barcode. I was "lucky" enough to find a copy of this recently. You almost never see the green labeled ones around for some reason...
