I interpret "modernism" as keeping up with the times and beyond just for the sake of it. VOIVOD were never that pretentious imo. They were a Metal band who just wanted to incorporate some Dark Progressive Rock (VDG Generator, Magma etc..) elements in their music and had a thing for sci-fi/futurist themes.
'Post-modern Metal' sounds like a paradox to me. Not sure exactly what sounds and what bands that would include.

Sorry if that's presumptuous, you didn't seem familiar with the philosophical usages of these terms.
Most modern metal is post-modern. A lack of sincerity, clear message and direct emotion, frequent use of irony, and a complete disconnect with the concept of 'originality' are strong traits of post-modern art. More or less what you hate in modern metal, no?
Modernism is a very hopeful movement in relation.

Voivod!!Modernism is a trend of thought that affirms the power of human beings to create, improve, and reshape their environment, with the aid of scientific knowledge, technology and practical experimentation, and is thus in its essence both progressive and optimistic.
AGREE!!!
to state it simply:
Modernism = content
Post-modernism = form
Choose.
I only don't know how to characterize their latest releases. Yet it seems to me they're trying to be subversive to contemporary scene.
