From this post I gather what I belive also to be worthwhile and add my own recommendations.
Morbid Angel - Altars and Blessed only. Especially Blessed. Get the remastered version, helps with the uneven sound of the original a lot.
Autopsy - I think I like everything they've done, but I'd go with Mental Autopsy if I could take only one CD of theirs with me. No, scratch that, this is one of these cases where I'd take the 'TORN FROM THE GRAVE' compliation. All killer - no filler!
Grave - Into The Grave and also I'd have to say Soulless.
Obituary - Slowly, Cause of Death
Bolt Thrower - everything. They do not have weak material.
Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
Immolation - Unholy Cult and Harnessing Ruin possibly
Asphyx - The Rack
Massacre - From Beyond
Suffocation - Pierced from Within, Human Waste and Despise the Sun
Demilich - Nesphite
The Chasm - all their work is very worthwhile
Slaughter - Strappado
Nocturnus - The Key
Dismember - Like an Ever Flowing Stream
Morgoth - Odium
Benediction - Rubicon
Magnus - I was watching my Death (Deathrash of OUTMOST QUALITY.)
Torchure - both albums are supreme
Demigod - Slumber is a great record, though not in my top picks
Crypt of Kerberos - The Macrodex of War
Dim Mak - Knives of Ice
Anata - Under A Stone With No Inscription
Atrocity - Hallucinations
Dusk - Mourning... Ressurect (doomdeath, but more death than doom for me. Amazing still)

Well, first I considered Bathory also Thrash metal...thats because I had their albums taped on the cassette (5 th generation copy or so)..I never saw any album covers, lyrics (I could not understand them anyway back then), interviews etc. Then in the beginning of 90s the picture cleared a lot.Korgüll wrote:I always considered early Bathory as death-metal, or not even that!??
It certainly wasn't known as black metal at the time... there was no such term back then, yes there was Venom blah blah. But that wasn't black nor death metal either.
So, I also did not know that Bathory was Black metal at first. But in western metal press and UG magazines between 1984-89 Bathory was almost always referred as Black Metal band. So I do not agree with Korgüll stament at all.
