More than sad, almost depressing.
The price is just insane but at least it's a nice pic to look at.
The blue/white/red LP looks impressive.

unless felt nearly everyone else i do not detest the Ghost record so much, it is quite ok imo but still wonder who could be such a die-hard fan of that band to need to own all those pressings of their only album (and another one who buys all the stuff  )

many of those pressings are not even that rare.

I think I own 8 vinyl copies of 'Ample Destruction' so I can't really say much here

I knew this auction would be hilarious. I've got no use for their gimmick personally; it reminds me too much of 'Witchery-Mania' from the late 90s. Anyone still "doing the 'W'" out there? Cheap satanic/anti-religious imagery is a great way to get your 15 minutes of Metal fame. And for the record, yes, I did give their music a fair chance and decided honestly that it's not my flavor; I prefer to drink the vomit of the priests from a different unholy chalice

I just died a little inside.

I wish I was a trendy fuck so I could cash in on stuff released a week ago. That damn Uncle Acid band had their die hards selling for hundreds right after the damn thing was released.

I wanted to write a few words about the music of Ghost when I posted the link, but then I realized it's just not worth it.

so according to you bootlegging is ok under specific premises right?
don't pretend you do not know what i mean by selling mp3s.i can put the air i breath on sale, would you buy it?
anyway let us do this other thing.i need 100 of you to give me the 'go' to press 100 copies of a rare lp.you know it's me and you buy it straight from me.would you still buy it?
It is useless to talk about it anymore.in a place where almost everyone cares about their investments and numbers only.the same people who cry about mp3s are ok to buy a bootleg as long as it is cheap...weird really.

Who says MP3 is ok to buy? I would NEVER buy a digital file. I'm just saying that it DOES happen.

But really, if I could buy a Warzwolf bootleg for a normal price of a new record, I sure as hell would. Rather than waiting 10 years for an original copy to turn up, and paying $5000 for it. How hard is that to understand? If the band came out with an official reissue, I'd buy the hell out of that. But since that's not very likely, if a bootleg is the only way for me to own it, I'd buy it. What's the problem? People are offended that more than 5 people worldwide are allowed to have a copy in their hands? That's pure elitism.

That always strikes me as weird too. The idea of these "modern, instant collectibles", like Die Hard editions, just doesn't click with me. In the past, bands did small numbers on colored vinyl b/c it was cheaper at the pressing plant. Now, they're deliberately pressed in small numbers to generate an instant demand. "Get your Limited Die Hard COCKHAMMER LP today, complete with a tuft of the lead singer's pubes! We shaved this poor chaps nads down to the roots so they'll never grow back, ensuring that these will be the only 75 copies ever produced".

How many of these bands will still have a fan base 5-10 years from now? Is anyone gonna want a Ghost LP in 2020? Sure, prices fluctuate as does demand, but it still strikes me as odd when people spend big $$ for brand-new items by bands that have yet to prove they're anything more than a one-hit wonder.

If I were buying these type of items for an investment, I sure wouldn't hold onto them very long. Maybe I'm cynical, but I don't see a lot of these things holding their value long-term. If these bands quickly burn out, demand will plummet (again, anyone wanna buy my Witchery collection? How about my Limp Bizkit t-shirt? All the kids still love the Bizkit, right?).

And unlike older vinyl items, these new editions will not disappear into trash bins, get beaten up, broken, etc. Most copies are going straight into acid-free, double-mylar collector's bags and put in an environmentally-controlled room out of direct sunlight. So 10 years from now 95% of copies will still be in Gem Mint, Like New, Virgin Vinyl Never Befouled By a Turntable Needle condition. Thus, supplies should always exist to meet the demand in the long-term.

The only way these items can continue to increase in price is if the band retains its popularity over time, and that's not likely to happen with a lot of these acts. Maybe Ghost becomes the next Iron Maiden and each of the records in the auction demands $500 in 10 years' time as thousands of new Ghost fans clamor to get one. But the odds say that Ghost will be gone, most of their fans will have grown up, cut their hair, and replaced their Mastodon T-shirts with suits and ties, and when they go to sell their priceless collectible that they paid several hundred bucks for..... who is gonna buy it? The whole thing just screams 'beanie baby fad' to me.

Sorry for the ramblings.

there is nowhere that i said that mp3s are ok to buy.my question is why the hell would someone need a physical copy when it is not original or officially released.make a physical cd -r for yourself and do not listen to the mp3 if thata is your problem.the pricing info is also useless as this is the price a seller decided for it or a stupid rich brainless guy paid for it.so you are one and i need 99more to press my bootleg and sell it to you.seems i will do you a favor.i'm your hero i guess.

Trigger- actually, you were the first person to say bootlegging was OK in some forms:
Trigger wrote:Stay with your mp3 instead.
Unless those mp3s were purchased from the band or an official distributor, those are bootlegs that are ripping the band off by circulating their music without compensating the artist properly. That's no different than someone pressing up 100 Warzwolf LPs in their basement and putting them on ebay starting at $20 each. People these days try to fool themselves by pretending that somehow mp3s 'don't count', but circulating mp3s rips bands off far worse than printing up a physical bootleg.

I understand if you don't like bootlegs, but in fact you only seem to have a problem with bootlegs that are physical copies, and not with digital file copies. The latter are much more likely to financially harm a band simply b/c they'll be more widespread. If only 100 Warzwolf boots were pressed, then at worst the band is out 100 sales (assuming they had 100 copies to sell in the first place). By following your advice and, "stay with your mp3s instead", the band could be out several hundred sales since the files could easily be downloaded by > 100 people.
Trigger wrote:my question is why the hell would someone need a physical copy when it is not original or officially released
Because people want something that resembles the original item. It's that simple. The same logic applies to reissues. To borrow your phrase, why the hell would someone need a physical copy when it IS an original or officially released? Again, why not just "stay with the mp3s"? The only difference is that with an official reissue the band gets paid; with an unofficial reissue the band does not get paid.

Just to clarify, I'm not advocating bootlegs, and I certainly don't approve of people trying to pass off fakes as originals. You obviously feel strongly about physical bootlegs, but your arguments of "stay with mp3s, why bother buying a fake?" are not very convincing.

In 1998, I bought a Deftones promo cassette at a yard sale for $0.25. I sold it in 2004 for $80. Nowadays it would probably demand the same quarter. Market goes up, market goes down. Just like stocks, those who can predict the fluctuations in the market will win big.

I absolutely would. I can't afford $1000 records. A decent quality bootleg would be perfectly fine with me. A decent quality official reissue would be equally fine with me. I like to own the albums I love, if they cost $1000 I won't buy them, I'm not rich. A reasonably priced boot is better than nothing.

Not necessarily and especially when we are talking about more underground bands whose music interests only a limited number of people and whose albums were pressed in very small quantities years ago and are hard to find these days. IMO not all who have already spent a fair amount of money on a bootleg will instantly grab the official release when and if it is out. That basically regards the case where the bootleg precedes the official release. Some will buy it, some will think about it twice before spending more money for something they already have and some simply won't buy it again. By having illegal mp3s of a long ago OOP album in your possession you aren't actually harming the sales when no official release is out yet and probably when one occurs chances are that you will try to buy it, that is if you do like the music. The thing here is not which of the two is less illegal than the other, both are stolen music anyway, however IMO there are cases where an illegally circulating mp3 isn't exactly ripping the band off in the worst possible way.
On the other hand, the quality of some bootlegs is simply shit. No difference with mp3s that are circulating on the internet. Example, I recently bought the NECROVORE DLP. The package is fantastic, but I hear no difference in the sound quality with the mp3s I already had. I spent 20 euros for an amazingly looking bootleg that was as listenable as the mp3s I had. Owning something in a physical format doesn't mean much to me in this case.
