Never heard a bad comment and i mean personally and by any oldschooler portuguese metalhead about Xeque Mate. We all respect them a lot.
They had a not so good period around 1988 when they lost definitely Paulo Barros 2nd guitar to focus on his own band Tarantula, and by this time they had on stage only 1 guitar and keyboards and they tried some new songs which were more Hard Rock/AOR orientated but always professioanlly delivered.
The 7'' Rob mentions is for me pretty good !
The band is active right now and there are rumors "something" is coming out soon someday.

Nah, he didn't really mean any bad thing on the band itself. He owns the 7'' and he is proud of having it in his shelves. It could had been released with even better sound and more professionally promoted but those were the dark days in Portugal for any band even the Rock or Pop ones. In those days only 10% of vinyl releases had a proper time in studio. It was a miracle to have a real heavy drum sound or really imposing guitars because of the almost non existent Rock sound engineers or producers. I think this is what he meant because he knows the story...doomedplanet wrote:yeah I was just commenting on what I read here about 'poor production':

I noticed the Portuguese section in the review-archive is pitifully small, so I'll be adding a couple of reviews & rips there too in the coming weeks. We'll start with the rarest of them all(?) :
