This is the point I have been trying to make the whole time, I will share with such people if they search something and see that I have it and ask me to add them, but the people I refer to just browse files and attempt to download all they can, which forced me to become user list only to prevent such leechers. Sometimes I do let people who have nothing I want download, but they are more likely to be a leecher in disguise and I take great caution with such people.ION BRITTON wrote:It has occured to me to send stuff to other people without expecting anything in return. I did that because they were very polite and not rude and they really tried to offer me something in return even though i didn't really need anything from their collection. I eagerly gave them some stuff they were searching for because their whole behaviour was really cool and i really appreciated it.

Well, you must consider that in the crazy mind of a collector it's not "just" the music that counts. There are many other things that can make a record interesting for me. Be it the cover, the lyrics, the rareness or whatever... Hell I even like the smell of 80ies metal records!ION BRITTON wrote:That's exactly what i mean. Forcing yourself to like something just because you paid a lot of money for it is far beyond my system of logic. Well, taste may vary of course, but this thing really happens quite often in the collectors' circles. I have talked in the past years with a few collectors and i tell you i heard pretty un-fuckin'-believable things.
There are many records I hold in high regards, although the music might be just average or below even to my own ears. Still I love them. And I probably wouldn't love them if I just had a copy of the music on a plain tape or MP3.

I understand your point. Yes, a record can be loved for various reasons, but imo a nice cover or some great lyrics can't change the pure music value of it. It's one thing to say ''Although the music sucks, i paid 100$ just because of the cover of this record, i really love it and i don't care about its price"- i can understand that and another "The music on this LP is GREAT because i paid 200$ for it". I hope you know what i mean.OmenOfSteel wrote:Well, you must consider that in the crazy mind of a collector it's not "just" the music that counts. yes, I know what you mean and I agree, a high price does not make the music on an album any better.ION BRITTON wrote:I understand your point. There are lots of expensive and great records out there. But on the other hand it often was for a good reason when bands were forced to do everything on their own with a private release due to lack of interest from the industry. In many cases that lack of interest was well deserved

music is information and i'm of the opinion that all information should be free and available to all
sure its frustrating sometimes when you get the 0-post leeches and those guys who download every single rare album in a night and claim to be the metal expert of the universe, but in the long run who cares really? these people are easy to spot and its not really worth getting riled up for. the only time i ban people on soulseek is when they do something really stupid like queue up my entire movies folder or something like that

Information? What does music actually inform you of?khiijol wrote:music is information and i'm of the opinion that all information should be free and available to all
Yes why should any artist actually expect to be compensated for their efforts ? How dare they! Music should be free -as soon as instruments and equipment are free ,venues are free , studio time is free , pressing plants are free ,electricity is free ,food is free , accomodation is free ,transport is free , petrol is free ,labour is free ,merchandising is free etc etc.....

I don't think it's harmful to the bands and to the fuckin' mu$ic bu$ine$$ to trade or share 80's metal (rare of semi-rare) or demos, most of this stuff is o.o.p.
For new releases, I use to download the ones who seem to be interesting to my ears. If I enjoy the record, I buy it. I can save a lot of money, it avoids me to buy tons of crappy albums.
On slsk I only have to three rules : share or be banned, one album at a time, user lists take what you want. If the guy has something to share, I don't care how many files he has oh how rare his stuff is. I've noticed that most users don't download your rarest shit, but more classic 80 's stuff.

Sharing is one of the the best thing about music in my opinion. I like going to friends and discovering new good stuff. I also enjoy it to play them some music they've never heard or talk about bands they should really check out. That's why I see music as a social thing. It's not just listening to the LPs in you room. Music is also going hunting for records with friends, banging your fists to heavy metal tapes in your car when you're carpooling, seeing the look on someone's face when you've just played them something they really really like, making mixtapes for someone, going to gigs together, having endless discussions on which LP is better, ... Without people to share it with, music would be more boring and less interesting. Why do you guys hang out on these forums? To share thoughts about music. This is what makes music more interesting.
About filesharing: I don't have any problems with 'new' or 'young' metalfans who want to download some cult/rare/obscure stuff without having a lot to offer in return. If you've just been introduced to a musical genre, and you know/heard all the classics, it's difficult to know where to go next. They have a right to hear Exterminator, Paradoxx, Hell, ARC, ...
I really hate the fact that some 'seasoned' metalheads think younger 'posers' don't have the right to listen to obscure stuff. It's as if those 'real' metalheads were born listening to Retrosatan...
I don't care if some of them are 'posers' or 'untrue'. Who cares??? It's their loss, they're wasting MBs and money on stuff they don't really like. (It's just as stupid as paying 1800$ for a legendary EP that sucks)

...and being so bloody in-the-know I always have the opportunity to steer them away from the first two crap-acts and towards the last 2 must-hearstomas wrote:They have a right to hear Exterminator, Paradoxx, Hell, ARC

I'm not following this either. There are good arguments both for and against sharing everything but this was a weird one.music is information and i'm of the opinion that all information should be free and available to all
Information about music on the other hand, that's a different story.
My motto is : "Share ör Die".
I agree with what tomas is saying. People should have full access to music. Most of the mp3's I have didn't cost me a thing, only a click on the mouse. I prefer 'posers' downloading from me, instead of 'posers' buying a kvltalbum in front of me in a store.
If I hadn't had the opportunity to download, I would never have the knowledge about metal, that I have now.
For instance, I learned a lot by downloading files from the the downloadsection on the Corroseum. The same goes for soulseek.

yeah thats what i meant, my brain was (and still is, so forgive me if the following makes little sense) still in a glaze of hangover when i postedDaN wrote: Information about music on the other hand, that's a different story.
artists of course deserve to get paid for their music
however, i see no problems distributing stuff that is obviously out of print/rare... demos, old lps, rehearsals, live bootlegs, etc. things like this should not be denied to anyone, especially because if you are searching for it in the first place you obviously have a passion for music beyond that of simply a casual listener

Soulseek is my weapon of choice and I do let anyone download anything from me as long as s/he shares stuff too and keeps it at 2 albums at a time. Posers allowed- I am not the one to judge-How could I know?- How could I tell?, Nazi Scheisse- banned [it's a karmic thing], Leechers- banned. Thankyous and music-appreciation talks are always welcome.
