Creepy UK sound

IMO that's the main reason why all those bands sounded like that back then. And although I'm a devoted US metal fan and although I could mention several non-british bands that are among my all-time mega-faves, the UK sound is closer to my heart more than any other sound. Metal or not, bleak or creepy, the british bands touch me really deeply: AMEBIX, JUDAS PRIEST, BLACK SABBATH, ANGEL WITCH, AXEGRINDER, FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM, EXTREME NOISE TERROR etc etcbigfootkit wrote: If there was any outside contributing factor which played a part in the sound, DaN's probably right to cite the socio/political background of the times, with Thatcher in power, blackouts, strikes, riots etc., it was a time of austerity and deprivation which affected most of the country and one which the North is still recovering from.
The atmosphere of the time was so bleak, it's no wonder that the bands which were around put so much angst into their craft, these were genuinely hard times, money was hard to come by and the future looked bleak.

Yeah, the zeitgeist of the 80s was very nihilistic and the music reflected that. Maybe that's why Metal started to suck after the Cold War ended
Seriously though, new bands full of kids who grew up in the 90s never went to bed scared that the entire planet was gonna be blown up by nukes
'Kit- if our current hard times are creating a new soundtrack to the apocalypse, does that confirm Justin Bieber is indeed the antichrist?

I'm not negative, merely realistic.Black Axe wrote:Especially with such negative people as you.bigfootkit wrote:Ah, well, we may at least get a good soundtrack out of the dark days ahead.
Of that i'm positive.

You're absolutely right there.Nightsblood wrote:Seriously though, new bands full of kids who grew up in the 90s never went to bed scared that the entire planet was gonna be blown up by nukes.
It's hard to imagine from our current time and perspective just how omnipresent and real that threat/possibility seemed/was at the time.
I grew up 15 miles from a nuclear submarine base so it was certainly on my mind a lot, but that dread certainly crept into many of the lyrics and the atmosphere of the music at the time.
Everone from Crass to Gillan adressed the issue lyrically, but the fear crept into the performances and the sounds too i think.
Oh, and i'm not sure about us needing a new "soundtrack to the apocalypse", but if such a thing were neccessary then Justin Bieber should definitely not be the last thing you hear before we all take the big sleep.
He is the fucking antichrist though.
