 That was excellent! I've missed this one totally, though I know some of the bands you mentioned there have been for download here. What's the story on it?
I'm the same position. I know of Act/Akt/Verdict through here but I have never heard Master Massive before and that song is STUNNING!! Spill the beans Dan.

Pretty cool, sounds like a leftover song from the "Into Glory Ride"-Session....
Where were you in '79 when the dam began to burst

I don't think it would qualify as a "most", but I like the epic tone that Dresden gave to "The Sounds Of Silence". I can't tell exactly why, but this doesn't sound to me like the typical sped up cover, there's something else to it.

Epic metal is my favourite genre.
I try to put some songs I’ve not seen in the topic:

Most epic here:
Manowar – Battle Hymns
Manowar – Gates of Valhalla
Manowar – Blood of my enemies
Manowar – Thor
Manowar – Heart of Steel
Crystal Phoenix – 474 Anno Domini
Crystal Phoenix – Somewhere, nowhere battle
Virgin Steele – Redeemer
Manilla Road – Ninth wave
Cirith Ungol – Chaos rising
Adramelch – Irae melanox
Wyxmer – I will rise again
Griffin – Flight of the Griffin
Heir Apparent – Keepers of the Reign (but perhaps the whole album IMO)
Iron Maiden – Alexander the great
Black Sabbath – Anno mundi
Black knight – Aaraigathor
Dark knight – Return of the dark knight
Thatcher – Esmeralda
Tantrum – Knights of fire
Crystal pride – Silverhawk
Heavy load – The guitar is my sword
Ex Danger - 1999

Some “epic with speed-thrash”:
Blind Guardian – Journey through the dark
Blind Guardian – The bard’s song
Blind Guardian – In the forest
Crom - Wasteland
Overkill – Kill at command (maybe not the whole song but has great epic moments)
Overkill – In union we stand
Holy terror – Guardians of the Netherworld
Satan’s Host – Into the veil

Some “epic” from 70’s:
Genesis – White mountain
Genesis – Dancing with the Moonlit Knight
Frupp – Future legends
Dragon – Lucifer
Asia – The taming of the bull
Legend – The destroyer
Wishbone Ash - Warrior
Kansas – Icarus, borne on wings of steel
May the Lords of light be with you

Nice stuff there Raven, honestly I hadn't heard of Crystal Phoenix before. Thanks for introducing me to it, sounds awesome. :D

I've got a few more non-metal recommendations:

Il Castello di Atlante - Chorale II
Nektar - A Tab In The Ocean
Apocalypse - Life Is Your Profession
Saga - The Writing
T2 - No More White Horses
The Old Man And The Sea - Going Blind
Fields - Over And Over Again
Ainigma - Diluvium
Spirogyra - The Furthest Point
St. Valentine's Day Massacre - Brother, Can You Spare A Dime
Ultimate Spinach - Genesis of Beauty
Tudor Lodge - Madeline
The Silly Surfers - Hodad Making The Scene With A Six Pack
Shadow Of A Man - Writing On The Wall
Lightshine - Sword In The Sky
Icecross - 1999 (Really heavy sound for its time!!)
Maxophone - Fase
Atomic Rooster - Devil's Answer
Jerusalem - Midnight Steamer

Thanks Clouds, great stuff too.
The T2 No more white horses is gorgeous, as dark and heavy for 1970 that souds really epic.
Also Atomic Rooster and Nektar were great.... the Prog and hard prog was the very first wave of epic music in Rock's history... Thanks King Crimson!!

Crystal Phoenix isn't really metal, has some folk and medieval sounds, but they are really awesome. IMO that can easily appeal to Manowar or 70's rock fans.

70's prog, rock, psych and jazz fusion were truly the metal music of their time. And all thanks to King Crimson indeed, my friend. Can't go wrong with them, I even love all of their musical eras, albums and side projects.

Also notable great music is that Canterbury scene stuff. :)

I agree with you mate!

Also Caravan, Hathfield & north and others were important. My taste is closer to classical sounds (flute, violin ecc) mixed with rock (another majestic example was High Tide one of my favourite band ever!) but also jazzy prog is very cool sometimes, for example the amazing bands like Catapilla (really unique and dark), Comus and Black Widow. I love them!

The Prog movement has the merit also of the birth of heavy metal IMO not directly but it changed very much the music thought of the period, just few months before Black Sabbath's coming, that anyway was the first real metal band.
So, hat off mighty 70's. :)

Yes great bands indeed, going to listen some more Comus, I'm not very familiar with that band's sound yet. Heard only a few songs.

Another proof for the theory is Faithful Breath and how they evolved from prog rock straight to heavy metal/hard rock.

On the side note I think that Italy has one of the best bands in many musical genres like prog, psych and garage. But also in doom, heavy and power metal.

Comus are quite strange but also very dark. There was many english bands really unique in prog rock.

Yes I agree about Faithful breath. In fact I like their prog Lps and also the last metal outfits.

Also In Italy there are enough great bands and fortunately most are quite innovative.

Innovation is the main point, if it's not innovative it should be at least "the older thing done well".

Raven, what's your point on those modern bands that claim to play so called "prog metal"? To me it seems like a some sort of gimmick.

I'm really not familiar with new prog but also not interested so much on it; I also have very few neo-prog items of the 80's.
I think all music movements are rather confined in own period; ok, there are some exceptions, but this is right for prog, as for nwobhm, also other genre.
Unfortunately actually the music is pretty poor of innovation for many reasons, and this is the why all here we are searching the old bands and their music.

I don't want to go too much off-topic so here are 2 very good epic songs just listened:
Glory bell's band - Sir Lionheart
Glory bell's band - Old viking man

/mod edit: just deleted all that huge quote chain since you're replying to the last post anyway. Cochino.
