80`s Metal vs. nowadays Metal
What do you think made the 80`s Metal scene so much superior to the nowadays scene?

There are not so many things to say for nowadays scene coz i FEEL nothing about it. The spirit is lost, originality is very hard to find and most of all inspiration which is almost absent. I'm not stuck at the 80's, i just happen to find the music created a few years ago much better. 4-5 cases are the exception to the rule, no need to discuss about them again and again.
Good against Evil, Evil sure to win

The music and artform of Metal was of chourse much younger in the 80's and there was much more different sounds and ways of writing to explore for the Metal musician. But if a band wants to develope a new sound today, or start a new genre it almost always turn out to be total crap, I dont have any exaple of a band today who have developed a good and new sound. Maybe EIDOMANTUM ??
What I dislike about the nowadays scene is, that we now have a universal Metal sound. Back in the 80`s a lot of countries had their own style and sound. For example many countries had their own original stars (who sold a lot in their homecountry), which were "idols" for the smaller bands. For example Manowar were mostly imitaded in the USA, Baron Rojo in Spain, Mercyful Fate in Denmark, Kreator or Helloween in Germany, Death SS in Italy, Rose Tatoo in Australia, Sortilege (and some others) in France, Divlje Jagode in Yugoslavia, Loudness in Japan, Kat in Poland, the whole NWOBHM sound was different and many others...this also goes for the extreme Metal...
In my opinion this originality was also due to the fact that Metal was more popular back then and therefore a lot of bands sang in their native language...I mean this made many bands sound very original though their music wasn`t anything new. Just look at the South East Asian scene with bands as Rusty Blade or Power Metal...

You got a really good point there.roihlem wrote:What I dislike about the nowadays scene is, that we now have a universal Metal sound. I think the modern production has something to do with it also!?
The classic thrash & death bands of the 80's, who have released 'come-back' albums, totally lost their original sound due to the modern recording & production styles of nowadays.
Plus it is very hard to sound original these days, due to (just about) everything having been done before!?!?!
Slayer are a classic example... once the ultimate gods of thrash, they now sound more like the bands who tried to copy them!!!

Well, it wasn't superior you see. Not by definition. As a matter of fact I can only think of two factors that would raise the 80's above the present.
1. Production. Today metal records are often produced, mixed and mastered by faggots and therefore sound like shite. This, however, may be a matter of taste, so the only relevant factor is this:
2. In 1980 metal was a young genre. Everybody was having a go at it and the flourishing creativity was bound to produce landmark bands and milestone albums within the next few years. It was only natural that most of the best and most important albums were released between 1982-86, at the height of heavy metal as a genre.
This, however, does not mean that bands of today are generally not as good as in the 80's. There are lots of bands today oozing with creativity, integrity and metal spirit. Bands like The Gates of Slumber, Slough Feg, Portrait, Twisted Tower Dire, Forsaken, Atlantean Kodex, Wrathblade, Reverend Bizarre etc. are better than most obscure 80's metal bands. And they are for sure better than most of the endless stream of mediocrity churned out by labels like Mausoleum, Roadrunner, Gama, Ebony etc in the 80's.

Matter of taste, I'd say. And I think it should be defined which are the most obscure 80's Metal bands. The bands that even here nobody knows because they were so mediocre it's bad (mediocrity could be even worse than sloppiness) or bands that this forum is dedicated to. On the other hand at least TTD could not compete with 80's bands - again matter of taste.mordred wrote: Bands like The Gates of Slumber, Slough Feg, Portrait, Twisted Tower Dire, Forsaken, Atlantean Kodex, Wrathblade, Reverend Bizarre etc. are better than most obscure 80's metal bands. I think some of members have already written in some other threads what should be done regarding 80's sound.
I am ... the One you warned me of
By that I mean those praised "über-rar and totally kvlt" private presses that sells for $$$$$$$$ on ebay. Many of these are very mediocre. A few are actually pretty fucking good. Most fall in the "ok and worth a listen" category. But the point is that most of them, whether ok or ultra-shitty, are not as good as the best bands of today.Noisenik wrote:Matter of taste, I'd say.
