personalities were fucked up enough to sign with a major label,i want to know what you meant Dan exactly?What type of personalities can we talk about?We should analysize this fact because we must understand more the differencies between an underground band and a mainstream 80's band.
For example can POISON have the same personality with a band like MESSIAH(US),or STORMWITCH with BATHORY,or GOTHAM CITY with GUNS 'N' ROSES( )?
1st major difference between major and underground 80's Metal bands: Luck. (Would the 2nd perhaps be talent?)
I mean, we're not talking diy Punk Rock here. I'm sure most of the old underground bands wanted to be the next IRON MAIDEN, but somehow factors like shitty management, living in the wrong town/country/hemisphere and just plain bad luck and circumstance got in the way. Apart from a handful of misanthropic Black/Death originators, Metal in the 80's was never about "staying underground", rather the opposite.
I'm not sure how I would apply the same things to European bands or bands from the rest of the world, I mean if a band has people I don't like from abroad I will most likely never meet someone like them because they are from else where in the world , I have no way of telling if they would be like an American of the same person type therefore I am more likely to say hey this stuff is pretty good, Don't get me wrong If a band is shitty a band is shitty and if a band is good a band is good, but I am more likely to dislike it even if they make good music because I see them as the individual who I despise on a personal level and I would not want to support them.
The white metal bands are usually comprised of what some would see in California schools then later else where trying to assert moral authority and joining Christian clubs, wearing their latest charity drive promotional shirt and what not, these type of people are usually not someone who is trying to convert you as actively as other Christian demoninations,they don't want more people in their circles without proper screening, they may invite you to a church event or something but they will not start preaching to you,they will usually appear to hate you because you weren't born into a Christian house hold or try to claim they are better in some way, It has roots in the Jesus movement of the late 60's and early 70's and sort of has a hippie meekness vibe to it, in that they do smoke weed and other activities that most Christians wouldn't usually do, the Christian metal bands aren't as adamant about converting as some of the other genres of music Christians have invaded.
I usually see christian metal bands using their christian upbringing as more of a template for their lyrics rather than saying "celebrate jesus celebrate" its more abstract and such, I feel they are still trying to say you should follow mainstream morals but not necessarily Christian.
Bands like Manowar for example I like their music but I've always saw them as some macho meat heads who I would seriously want to fight on the streets,they very much fit the jock stereotype in many ways and they never seemed to have had a hard time in public life, that and their new york arrogance just adds to it.
I shall write more later when I can hopefully better describe or clear up some of the stuff I wrote.
Well guys, believe me, that you'll never come to firm conclusion. It's fine that you are brimming with energy, but later in life you might be sorry for focusing on less important issues. Though it's hard to say which are really important issues. I guess in our case this is the music and question how does the bands sound, not look or act (followers of extreme ideologies excluded). For example: I listen to music with eyes closed. I got to concentrate.

Ryan, do so if you see fit. Though I didn't understand everything you wrote ... well, living on this planet can be pretty weird. If you'll want to be angry or pissed off you will find numerous chances to get angry or pissed off. Some things are better to be ignored, some you can connive at, while certain you better fight against - macho meatheads are not among last unless they attack you phisically.
