About 15 years ago I bought MAJESTY-CRUSADERS OF THE CROWN 12" on some flee-market. By mistake I always played it on 33rpm and loved the cool/unique sound of the band, haha. Took me a while to realize it was not intended to be doomy ...

That's the topic I've reminded myself of too when I read Stens posts. Well I much rather play 45ers on 33.3 rpm. 33 on 45 ... well I guess instrumentals go, but most of tracks with vocals sound ... too high I think ...

in the past I've been searching for a turntable with 16 rpms possibility ...

Just remembered: as a kid and totally new to these vinyl-thingies I bought the "Fuck like a beast" 12" and I don't think I even knew that you could play records at different speeds. One week later me and my cousin discussed this new hip band called WASP and got into quite an argument. I couldn't belive how he could think they were anything but crap! Those shitty vocals? And that weird guitarsound? Took me months to figure it all out...

But, when i was young i always played my records a bit faster than normal, about at 35rpm !!!

You cannot do that with CD's !

Two years ago I've ripped a larger part of my vinyl collection into mp3s, and I ripped some 7' and 12' on 33 as well. For example, Anthrax - Fistful Of Metal sounds really gloomy - on the verge of falling apart. Conception - In Your Multitude 12' sounds interesting while some dronology I also convert sounds equally droney albeit 1/2 octave lower. And I just reminded myself that I got another 7-inch not so long ago. god knows would Christer deem it blasphemy?

being fooled already a couple of times with*
* no mentioning of the speed on a vinyl
* different mentioning of speed on the two different vinyls sides
* wrong mentioning of speed on a vinyl
I rather speed all 7"es at 33 rpm first. if if sounds cool, it stays with it. When the vocalist or drums sound shit, ten put it on 45. Though there are still some EPs I am completly uncertain. Black Metal 7"-EPs on 45 sound damn killer Death Metal on 33rpm. Suffocation's first MLP on 33rpm sounds ultra. Hellhammer's A-side played on 33rpm too.

However, 18 years ago I didn't own a vinyl player but started to buy vinyls and asked a friend to copy some on tape so that I can listen to them.Tthat was a Jazz-Rock guy, and he didn't know that the Hellhammer Buried And Forgotten 7" is on 33rpm, not 45, and didn't bother about it either when I complained...

I've voted the first one. That only counts for 45 rpm death metal 7"s. Some of them sound as the most apocalyptic doom I've ever heard.

For example the Cianide/Machetazo 7". Play the Cianide side on 33,3 rpm and you'll hear some devastating music. On the normal speed level it sounds killer too, but the "doom" version is really perfect imo.

I play my 33's at 33 rpm and my 45's at 45 rpm. Is there a PROBLEM with that?

A friend has an old turntable with the option 75 RPM, weird sounding for most LPs

But at least you can listen to nearly the double amount of vinyls during the day

The joy of heaviness or speed you get from playing at a different rotation velocity is often killed by the weird pitch that follows.

Much more fun then to have a digital sound editing tool. like Cool Edit pro for instance, and alter the tempo of an mp3 while leaving the pitch unchanged. It's fun as hell!

I voted the first for nostalgic reasons mainly. Me and a friend used to liste to stuff like Picture and other European metal 45s at 33, 'cos there just wasn't enough doomy metal around. This was most probably around 1983-84.
