Manilla Road: Playground of the damned

Mhmmmmmmm. Was ist vom 2011er MANILLA ROAD - Album zu halten. Nun, sowohl "Jackhammer" als auch "Into the maelstrom" und der Titelsong laufen an mir vorbei ohne auch nur irgendeinen Eindruck hinterlassen zu haben. Natürlich ist Mark Sheltons Stimme einzigartig, aber irgendwie reicht das nicht, wenn die Songs leichförmig daherkommen. Da rettet auch das grandiose Coverartwork nicht allzuviel. Sehr wenige Höhepunkte gibt es zu bestaunen. "Grindhouse" ist besser geraten und wirkt düster doomig. "Abattoir de la mort" ist neben "Fire of Ashurbanipal" für mich der stimmungsvollste Song des Albums. Hier stimmt Athmosphäre und Stimmung und auch das Songwriting ist überzeugend. "Brethren of the hammer" hat dagegen den wohl besten Refrain. Reicht mir irgendwie aber noch nicht aus, um zu einem insgesamt überzeugend positivem Gesamturteil zu kommen. Drei wirklich überzeugende Songs bei acht insgesamt.....mhmm......

If you waited with curiously for the new album of MANILLA ROAD maybe it can be disappointing for you. Most of the songs live only from the voice of Mark Shelton, but this seems to be not enough because the music is mainly in the first half of the album positivley said "hypnotic" or a bit less euphemistically spoken: BORING! Only very few highlights can be found and I had to wait until track 4 to find the first better song. So even the great coverartwork could not really bluff me after listening to the whole thing a second time. The best chorus you will find on "Brethren of the hammer". "Abattoir de la mort" and "Fire of Ashurbanipal" seem to be the most athmospheric songs. Ok, "Art of war" is a semi-ballad. Not bad, but missing the last "kick". So decide yourself. Of course the few fine songs are worth to be collected, but there are a lot of fillers too.
