Stairway: the other side of midnight

Das Cover der neuen STAIRWAY gefällt mir ÜBERHAUPT NICHT!! Und das ist schon der einzige Kritikpunkt. Natürlich ist mir klar, daß sich eine Band ohne Label keinen Coverzeichner wie Rodney Matthews leisten kann, der ja das erste Album der Band angefertigt hatte. Aber Gartenzwerge vor Säulenbogen? Naja, auf die Musik kommt es an und da gehts wieder Richtung des ersten grandiosen Albums "No rest-no mercy". Ein sehr guter Opener und das überragende folgende "Sea of fools" rechtfertigen den Kauf der CD allein. Natürlich leben STAIRWAY von ihrem gigantischen Sänger Graeme Leslie. Charismatische Sänger haben ja auch Bands wie DEMON, PRAYING MANTIS oder MAGNUM ausgezeichnet. Am ehesten würde ich STAIRWAY in Richtung PRAYING MANTIS gemixt mit RAINBOW sehen, gesanglich und musikalisch sind hier starke Ähnlichkeiten festzustellen. Das heißt im Klartext: Sehr eingängige Songs britischer Tradition, irgendwo in der Post-NWoBHM verwurzelt. (Das hört sich jetzt schon an wie eine wissenschaftliche Abhandlung). Um nicht vollends davonzuschweben zurück zu den Songs: Ob "Lead us" oder "She calls" oder "Soldiers of heaven", Eingängigkeit ist Trumpf und dabei werden keine platten Klischeesongs gewaltzt sondern epische Hard Rocker der obersten Liga zu Gehör gebracht. Von mir eine klare Kaufempfehlung! Wer das erste Album der Band mochte, muß auch hier zuschlagen!

In my opinion since their mighty Debut-album this is their absolute best work although all albums are strong! but who made the coverartwork? Some computeranimated garden gnomes in front of pillars. Maybe there is some deeper meaning -in fact I am quite sure about that- but first impressions never lie... As this is the only thing I find to criticise lets go back to music: Of course the great vocals of Graeme Leslie are allways worth buying an album, but the melodylines will conquer your ears faster than you might think. Fans of PRAYING MANTIS will also love STAIRWAY because they play this typical post-NWoBHM-melodic style, far away from american commercial-stuff in the best european tradition of catchy Hard Rock with epic touch. Hear songs like "Sea of fools" or "Lead us" and you will know what I mean. "She calls" is what I would expect from RAINBOW today if they were still alive. Great album! Must-have!
