Snake Eyes: Soul stealer

Was für ein Brett? Hatte ich auf einer bekannten Internetplattform mal kurz reingehört und gedacht: "Ah ja, hört sich gut an, aber der Sound ist mager", liegt jetzt die CD vor mir, naja, eher im CD-Spieler...und haut alles weg (die Nachbarn, meine Ohren etc.).

Der Vorgänger lief bei mir unter der Rubrik: Anhörbar aber unspektakulär. "Soul stealer" ist spektakulär! Selten kommen im Speed Metal-Sektor derartig überzeugende Werke auf den Markt. "Burnout" ist für mich der Speed Metal-Song des Jahres und "The Ghost of Cortachy" frisst sich wie ein Alien (aus dem Film "Alien") in die Gehörgänge, aber das sind nur zwei Anhörempfehlungen für ein Album, welches die Konkurrenz aus USA und Resteuropa in 2008 an die Wand spielt.

Neben den vielen hervorragenden, aber melodiöseren Bands aus England wie STAIRWAY, MAGNUM, SARACEN oder PRAYING MANTIS, sind SNAKE EYES auf einem Level mit einem Klassike wie "Perfect man" von RAGE (gut, das sind Deutsche, aber das einzige was mir sonst einfällt, wäre SAXON auf höherer Umdrehungszahl und das ist ein komischer Vergleich).

Nicht nur die enstprechende Zielgruppe sollte sich jetzt angesprochen fühlen. Ein guter mittelhoher Sänger, hervorragende Songs, ein ansprechendes Coverartwork. Leute, was wollte Ihr noch??? SNAKE EYES ist die Speerspitze des britischen Stahls in 2008!

Wow! Some minutes on a well known commercial webpage were enough to convince myself about ordering "Soul stealer" although I thought the sound was a bit thin.

A big error!! The sound is FAT. Having "Soul stealer" in the CD-Player the first album "The journey begins" which I kept in mind as "nice" but not very spectacular is totally forgotten.

The speedy Opener "Burnout" is probably one of the best in Speed Metal I heardt since I bought the Album "Perfect man" from RAGE in 1988 (ok, this is a German band, but one of the leading ones in the late 80s, so maybe it makes a bit clearer what I want to express). Also more melodic songs like "The Ghost of Cortachy" or "Into war we go" fit perfect to that style and have a catchyness you might not expect from such VERY HEAVY Metal.

Some may say that Heavy Metal is dead in Great Britain and in comparision to the quantity and playing level of other European countries this is not far from the truth, but as long as there are bands like SNAKE EYES there is hope for good music also in England. Beside the very fine but more hard rocking bands SARACEN, PRAYING MANTIS, MAGNUM or STAIRWAY we are happy that SNAKE EYES try to go the way of Power Metal and do it better than anyone would have expected.

The quite high vocals combined with the melodious powerful riffing guitars break through the boring english music industry. The stupid radio-Zombie-audience will probably ignore it again, but the "real" listeners should not miss this occasion for british steel!
