Spartan Warrior: Behind closes eyes

Daß nach 25 Jahren (gefühlt 100) noch einmal ein Album von SPARTAN WARRIOR auf den Markt kommen würde, hätte zumindest ich nicht erwartet.

Die beiden Klassiker NWoBHM-LPs aus den 80ern zieren wohl als CD oder LP-Version jede anständige NWoBHM-Sammlung, weshalb die Erwartungen natürlich nicht gerade klein ausgefallen sind bezüglich "Behind closed eyes".

Also Disc einlegen und gleich von "Never take me alive" wegbrettern lassen. Das ist NWoBHM nur eben von heute. Die folgenden "Last man standing" und ""Tear out your heart" überzeugen durch fantastische Refrains und starken Songaufbau. Einfach aber genial.

Natürlich tut die Stimme von Dave Wilkinson ihr übriges, um die Songs zu veredeln. Rau, einprägsam und immer genau am Song orientiert. Warum haben wir nicht mehr solche Könner?

Mit "Loud n proud" kommt ein etwas schwächerer Song zu Gehör, was aber gleich wieder vom melancholischen Titelsong "Behing closed eyes" aufgefangen wird. "As good as it gets" ebenfalls klasse! Wer Freude an STAIRWAY hat, muß auch SPARTAN WARRIOR haben. Das kommt auch im balladesken "Time" zum Ausdruck.

Ich habe noch nichts zum Sound gesagt. Der kommt fett aber zum Glück nicht ansatzweise modern. Stellt Euch ein sehr gut produziertes Album von 1987 vor und wir sind am nächsten dran. Das beweist auch nochmal "Love's a game" welches auch Überschneidungen zu SAXON nicht leugnet. Der letzte Song "Flesh and blood" ist vielleicht nicht ganz so zugänglich, aber entfaltet sich nach mehrmaligem Hören. Er beschließt ein Album welches Lust auf mehr macht.

Jungs, Ihr seit noch nicht zu alt für den Rock'n'Roll und "Too young to die" sowieso!

After 25 years (feels like 100) we have the chance to listen to a new album from the NWoBHM-heroes SPARTAN WARRIOR. I would not have expected this at all, but what a nice surprise.

The two classic 80s NWoBHM-LPs from the band everybody who has a solid NWoBHM-collection will own and so I am sure a lot of people are very curious on the new material.

So lets put the CD in the player and listen......YES, this is still true NWoBHM (or let's call it Post-NWoBHM). A song like the thundering "Never take me alive" is the ideal start. The following "Last man standing" and "Tear your heart out" shows great musicianship and a fantastic chorus.

Of course Dave Wilkinsons voice fits perfect to the songs and his rough and smooth vocals gives the special touch to the whole thing.

The first weaker song "Loud n proud" ist just a filler to the melancholic "Behind closed eyes" and the fast "As good as it gets". If you are a fan of bands like STAIRWAY, you will find strong similarities in the semi ballad "Time" which is of course at same quality level. All in all STAIRWAY is the nearest band to compare the sound with and most of you will know that this is also a great band!

"Love's a game" makes it clear to us that SPARTAN WARRIOR come from the same time when SAXON had their great moments and the last song "Flesh and blood" maybe needs a bit more time to be explored and is the final cut for a comeback which hopefully will be not a one time effort. We wait for the next strike guys. You are still not too old for Rock and Roll and for sure too young to die.
