Buffalo: Ride the beast

Das war auch nicht zu erwarten, daß noch einmal etwas von BUFFALO erscheinen würde, aber die Band existiert immer noch, auch wenn es sich bei der vorliegenden CD um ein unveröffentliches Album der Band aus den Achtzigern handelt. Nach der überragenden Single "Mean machine" (1980 glaube ich) und einer Compilation-CD Ende der Neunziger mit sehr gutem Songmaterial liegt nun das unveröffentlichte Album BUFFALOs vor. Typischer NWoBHM, abwechslungsreich und mit sehr guten Songs, jedoch schwankender Soundqualität, was angesichts des Alters nicht verwunderlich ist. Zum Glück hat Karthago Records nicht am Sound rumgebastelt, so daß die Songs das absolute 80er-Feeling behalten haben. Songstrukturen wie bei etwa bei den Songs "Mother" oder "The answer" haben damals auch Bands wie LIMELIGHT, INCUBUS, MENDES PREY oder SAMSON erschaffen und stehen heute noch für anspruchsvolles und dennoch eingängiges Songwriting. Natürlich gibt es auch die typischen Riff-lastigen NWoBHM-Kracher ("She's got no heart" oder "Rock circus"), aber insgesamt wird Abwechslungs sehr groß geschrieben. Die Bonustracks sind zum Teil neu eingespielte alte Songs. Hier ist auch der Sound etwas fetter, was gerade Brechern wie "The other side of you" oder "Don't back down" perfekt zu Gesicht steht. Aber auch "If love is a crime" mit seinem genialen Aufbau sollte man nicht hinten an stellen. Daß man "Mean machine" nochmal mit auf die CD genommen hat, ist sehr schön, handelt es sich doch um den alten Single-Klassiker der Band. Aber warum irgendwas herausheben? "Ride the beast" ist ein Klassiker! Das Video "Why in hell" (starker Song) habe ich leider auf der Vorabpromo-CD nicht sehen können. Angeblich ist es eine Art Studio-Session-Clip. Insgesamt bleibt zu vermerken, daß BUFFALO eine lohnenswerte Anschaffung auf CD ist, da in der letzten Zeit doch einige sehr durchschnittliche Werke aus der NWoBHM veröffentlicht wurden. Zeitgleich erscheint von BUFFALO auch Vinyl für Sammler. Die LP enthält komplett anderes Material als die CD (also keinen der 9 Album-Songs und auch keine der Bonustracks), sondern Songs von Sessions, Demos etc. und kann deshalb hier noch nicht beurteilt werden. Witzig ist das Coverartwork, welches in der CD zu finden ist. Dies war ein Vorschlag für die CD, aber zum Glück wurde es nicht genommen. Der Büffel auf dem Cover ist doch um einiges schöner!

Beautiful release of this BUFFALO-album which for luck was not disappeared somewhere in musicians houses. You will find here very worked out typical NWoBHM-songs with that great 80s feel. Its more into the style of SAMSON, LIMELIGHT, INCUBUS and others and not the harsh stuff like JAGUAR or SAVAGE, but this makes it for me more interesting because the songstructures are by far more interesting. a pity that there were only 9 Songs, but at this time the LP was the usual format and so there was not enough space for more songs. The CD contains a lot of additional Bonus-songs which were from later times and convince also. The sound is a bit better but the songstructures stayed the same! Great material! For the artwork the band used the second proposal. A first sketch you will be able to take a look on in the booklet, but its good that they decided to take the Buffalo on the booklet cover.
