Armageddon: Egyptian Suite

Schon seit über 20 Jahren sind die serbischen ARMAGEDDON aktiv und einige von Euch werden sich vielleicht noch an "Heavy Metal Saga" von 2002 erinnern, ein Album welches auch noch remasterte Aufnahmen aus den 80ern enthielt.

War "Heavy Metal Saga" lupenreiner 80er orientierter Heavy Metal, ist "Egyptian suite" gelinde gesagt, eine völlige Überraschung.

Wie schon der Name andeutet, handelt es sich um ein Konzeptalbum über das -alte- Ägypten. Musikalisch bedient man sich dabei nicht nur beim traditionellen Heavy Metal sondern auch in den 70ern und bei Rockalben der Marke ALAN PARSONS oder auch YES bis hin zu LE ORME ALICE COOPER (seiner End-Siebziger-Phase), BLACKMORES NIGHT und PAUL CHAIN.

Dazu nahm man sich auch einfach mal Musiker vom serbischen Nationalorchester zu Hilfe und Marta Balasz (Sopran) sowie Florijan Balasz (Violine) leisten ganze Arbeit damit, das Werk völlig aus dem normalen metallischen Rahmen herauszunehmen.

Die Songs sind natürlich, wie bei Konzeptalben so üblich, aufeinander abgestimmt. Faszinierend ist dabei die große Eingängigkeit des Gesamtwerks wie auch einzelner Stücke ohne jemals irgendwie klischeehaft zu werden.

"Egyptian Suite" ist meilenweit entfernt von der italienischen und spanischen Schwemme an epischen Bands mit Zwergen, Rittern, Drachen und so weiter, bleiben aber trotzdem eingängig mit Ohrwurmcharakter, so seltsam das auch klingen mag.

Musikalisch über jeden Zweifel erhalben hält sich Guitar-Wizard George Letich erfreulich zurück was den Songs Raum gibt. Stücke wie "Children of Ra", "Horus, the Avenger" oder das geniale von Marta Balasz gesungene "Bastet" sind das stärkste was ich je aus Serbien gehört habe.

Nach TORNADO (sehr gute klassiche Metal Band) hat sich George Letic mit seiner Hauptband ARMAGEDDON und dem Album "Egyptian suite" ein Denkmal geschaffen. Ein Denkmal welches viele nicht verstehen werden.

Wer stampfigen Metal erwartet ist hier falsch, ebenso wer ein "progressives" Metal-Album hören möchte. Dafür sind die Songs zu eingängig, aber genauso falsch ist, wer nach HAMMERFALL und ähnlichem Ausschau hält.

ARMAGEDDON ist mit "Egyptian Suite" völlig eigenständig geworden. Wenn Ihr Sachen wie DEEP SWITCH, ENERGY VAMPIRES, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT oder DEATH SS im Schrank stehen habt, dann könnten Euch auch das eigenwillige "Seth, the evil one" oder der unerwartete Speed Rock-Metal-Song "Anubis, the fobidden Name" überzeugen. Dazu gibt es tolle akkustische Passagen und Instrumentals. Kurz gesagt:

Seltsam, eigenartig, genial!

After "Heavy Metal saga" you might expect that "Egyptian suite" is another fine Metal-Album in that style. Definitely not.

ARMAGEDDON improved and went to their own absolutely unique style. Its very had to describe this album. You will find a lot of influences beginning with bands like ALAN PARSONS, LE ORME, PAUL CHAIN or YES over classical ingredients up to Power Metal beside very catchy chorus lines which in fact are no real chorus-lines but well elaborated structures of themes in each song. Even instrumental music freaks will be happy with the strong guitars of George Letic who always works for the song not for his Ego.

"Egyptian Suite" is the best album from Serbia ever. Not more not less. Georges side-project TONRNADO was very strong too, but as the last ARMAGEDDON-ALbum it was real 80s Metal. "Egyptian suite" is unique and strange. Not for anybodies taste. Guitar driven Metal, Instrumental and accustic parts, but with more Metal than for exemple BLACKMORES NIGHT.

If you like commercial easy-listening stuff forget about it. If you want to listen to an album more than once and always find new details although the melody-line is catchy enough to stay in your mind after being heard once, then it will be for sure a fantastic journey to the egyptian gods of Metal!
