Impulse: Gladiator

This is second IMPULSE album /they have released 1987 debut LP previously playing conventional Hard Rock in Deep Purple style and slightly different line-up/. Equipped with new high-pitched vocalist, second guitarist, and completely new leather-and-iron image the album immediately opens with a fast straightforward speed metal grenade – instant live favorite of the fans. Even though, the sound and mixing on the LP is beyond horrible (this is actually the very first Bulgarian metal LP and one can tell that Balkanton /the national radio and television recording studio/ engineers didn’t have any idea how to handle it) you still can hear and feel the energy and power it delivers. The side A is more conventional straightforward heavy metal in the style of Malice and Leatherwolf, spiced with mid-paced and emotionally charged ballad Stay”. Flipping the vinyl over, though, is almost like listening to two different bands: as side A is settled conventional heavy metal, the side B contrasts with blasting neo-classical baron” metal in the veins of Racer X, Apocrypha, and Cacophony to name few. Wild shredding, breathtaking solos, fancy riffing, and tasty vocals, you name it! If Shrapnel have heard it they would have signed it instantly beyond any doubt! In conclusion I can only add that, even though, the sound is poor and cover artwork – hilarious beyond belief, this LP remains an outstanding gem, harder to find even than the famous and elegant AHAT LP.
