Gallows Pole: Waiting for the mothership

Auch wenn oder gerade weil GALLOWS POLE mit ihrem Album "Waiting for the mothership" quasi den Nachfolger von "In rock we trust" einzimmern und alle Alben dazwischen als stilistische Weiter- oder Fortentwicklung komplett ignorieren, ist ihnen das insgesamt stärkste Album ihrer Karriere gelungen. Wer "In Rock we trust" mochte, braucht "Waiting for the mothership" sowieso. Selten war die Band so heavy und musikalisch niemals zuvor so ausgereift obwohl alle anderen Alben ebenso zeigen, was für Könner am Werk sind. Wem "Flight of the dolphins" zu progressiv, "IV" soundmäßig zu schwach und "Revolution" zu poppig war, wird "Waiting for the mothership" als erneuten radikalen Schritt sehen. Kein Pop mehr, fetter Sound und progressive Anklänge höchstens wenn man die vielen 70er-Einflüsse als progressiv gelten lassen mag. Selbst eine Halbballade wie "Return to paradise" ist noch heavy und gewinnt mit jedem Mal hören! Die Songs ziehen hypnotisch in den Bann wie etwa der Titelsong oder "Old man cry". Und dazu passt auch das Coverartwork von Markus Vesper geradezu perfekt. "Wating for the mothership" will in keine Schublade. Fans von BLUE ÖYSTER CULT werden ebenso angesprochen wie Anhänger von DEEP PURPLE oder RAINBOW. Aber auch wer ein doomiges Feeling mag, kommt auf seine Kosten. Nachdem ja GALLOWS POLE von Karthago zu Pure Rock gewechselt sind, weil Karthago als Label noch mehr auf 80er Metal spezialisiert, wurde trotzdem noch ein Kathago-typisches farbiges Tray verwendet. Warum nur in gelb statt in weiß? Schaut schon ok aus, aber in weiß hätte es noch schöner gewirkt, vor allem zu dem gigantischen Cover von Markus Vesper, welches wirklich hervorragend zur mystischen Musik passt.

"Waiting for the mothership" is the album which should have been released after "In rock we trust". More heavy, more sinister, perfectly played with a late 70s, early 80s feel, but a fat and powering sound. The songs float like a lava-stream through your stereo. Its not Doom, but dark, misterious and even a semi-ballad like "Return to paradise" has this strange time warp feel. Without doubt their best album ever. No more esoteric prog like on "Smile of the dolphins", no more Pop-Hard Rock like on Revolution and forget the weak sound on "IV". "Waiting for the mothership" is what I expected after "In Rock we trust". The band needed 30 years to record a second album in that style, but finally they did a perfect job! If you are into unique Hard Rock/Heavy Metal and your heroes of the 70s were DEEP PURPLE, RAINBOW but also like the 70s groups BEGGARS OPERA, BUDGIE or BLUE ÖYSTER CULT, you should give this great album a chance. The coverartwork of "Waiting for the mothership" was done by Markus Vesper and it transports perfectly the doomy extraterrestrial feeling of the songs. The lim. ed. with a yellow tray is nice but in this case a white tray would have looked much more nice, so maybe change it at home.
